So it's my big birthday next year. I have always struggled with my weight. In my early 40s in managed to get down from a size 22ish to 12/14. Now I am back up to a 14/16 and have a wardrobe full of monsoon skirts and dresses I can't get into. I feel sluggish and unfit.
I ve managed to stop the rot and managed to lose a few pounds this year, but I want to get back into those clothes, and I don't want to be fat and fifty.
so the soup maker is coming out of retirement. I am going to start running when Simba goes to cubs instead of slouching in front of the TV. No alcohol until half term, when I will allow myself a glass of wine, and then none till Christmas. One chai latte a week. We are getting our allotment this weekend so plenty of calorie burning digging to do.
See how long I last !

Good luck with all that! I'm trying to lose weight. I put it on after the children moved in. I've recently been put on medication for high blood pressure too. I now aim to go on a decent walk every day as well as being careful about what I eat. I'm planning to join a gym class, take up indoor climbing and resume cycling and swimming. I hope I can keep up my motivation.

Good luck - I need to lose about half a stone, but it is hard with my job and snacks in the house for Sqk. I have always been a grazer in eating terms so need to discipline myself more - managed before DH & I got married which was the last time I was at my preferred weight. I do have medical reason for why I put it on just wish it was as easy to shift as it used to be - would love to have done it in time for my 40th in 6 months.... Wish I could go swimming & to the gym again but it is finding the time with a DH who works 9-6 with no flexibility - and working full-time myself (effectively 4 days as it happens).

Have mentioned the 5/2 guys ....
It is brilliant.... Even now not actually watching what I eat I still have fast days.... Havn't put that much on even without my manic winter schedule of physical activity & workouts... Really am a believer....
Good Luck serrakunda.... At least my accidents with Cadbury Creme Eggs are behind me ( until new year when they hit the shops again!!)

40 was be my 'lose it' milestone but i'm past 50 now and still have the excess weight, plus a bit more. with high blood pressure, joint problems and rounder than ever after a summer of no babies think I need to take myself in hand too. but I run out of inclination so fast! and I always start off with I must lose 6 stone, which I know is unrealistic for day/week/month 1! need to take heed of the weight watchers goals which is usually just for 10%, still a lot for me to grasp though (literally!), think 5% might be more realistic!

Hi loadsofbubs
I empathise! It's hard when you need to lose quite a bit of weight. The trouble is it gradually creeps up on you over the years. I have decided that in terms of motivating myself I shall avoid thinking about how many stones I need to lose. Instead I am setting myself a goal of losing half a stone at a time. It seems much more achievable. I have recently taken up knitting again while I watch the TV in the evening. I realised that this was often when I snacked (like being at the cinema) so the knitting keeps my hands busy and my attention occupied.

I lasted about two hours on the 5:2!
I'm hoping with a few tweaks to my diet and a bit more exercise I can lose half to a pound a week. I have a bit of a latte habit, snack too much at weekends. I'm reducing portion sizes, and have started doing separate meals for Simba, will replace two or three meals evening meals week with soup. I'd rather go slowly, it's more likely to stay off that way
dont have a weight goal as such, aim is to get back into those monsoon frocks

Menopause and being housebound with a difficult DD doesn't help. Am determined to get out and walk everyday once DD is back at school - that's if we can get her back - been home since 19th of may. I'm heavier now than when I was fully pregnant with BS

well it was going ok until the cat disappeared and I ate a pork pie and nicked some of Simba's Haribo's !
I can go back to the gym today and now we have the allotment there will be digging, so will get moving

I understand about the pork pie. Not about the Haribo's, though. Not my choice of comfort food!
You know that you CAN make your goal, though!

It was a mini pork pie 187 calories and I would have preferred chocolate buttons but beggars can't be choosers Pleased to say that despite holiday in Cornwall involving a lot of wine and puddings and not having been to the gym for two weeks, I didn't put any more weight on. The number wasn't great, but I have a starting point. Maybe I should check in weekly with trainer corkie to keep me on the straight and narrow

As of 1st Sept DH and I have been back on MyFitnessPal again. We did it once before about 3 years ago just before a big holiday and got down to our ideal weight, but over the years it has crept back on so hoping to lose before Christmas!!!
Will be 55 on Sunday scary. Where have those years gone?
Update ... 3 weeks in on the above 'MFP' free calorie counting diet ... 6 lbs lost so far!

I cannot swear by this myself, but a friend of mine who is in her mid fifties has kept a svelte figure since going on the porridge diet, this is porridge and apple for breakfast, porridge and banana for lunch, mackerel on toast for supper followed by, you guessed it, bowl of porridge and fruit of choice... she does this five days a week. she lost an amazing 4 stone and has kept it off. Mr M is contemplating trying it..

That's two bowls of porridge a day too many for me. And it's probably about 1500 calories a day so actually not that restrictive a diet. Hope she gets lots of veggies and protein at weekends because it's very poor nutritionally

Another 'loser' here :-)
Took DD to her swimming lesson today and they have installed some scales now. They don't do body fat percentage (thank goodness) but gives BMI and ideal weight. My goal for now is to get below 11 stone....about 6 pounds. Need to lose at least 2 stone to be upper limit of ideal weight.
I am impressed by your 4k run serrakunda!!

That's what I'll be doing, Simba has hour cubs on Mondays , hour and a half woodcraft folk on Wednesday and tennis for an hour on Thursday. I'll be doing one run, hours digging at the allotment and a walk. Plus gym on Thursday and Friday and I've started taking myself for a run when Simba has training at the weekend, At least until the clocks go back and well see what the weather does

Sooz you are being subversive!
Well, I was supposed to be having a swim while DD has her lesson but have managed it only once. BUT I managed not to buy chocolate from the vending machine while she was in the pool, so thats a step in the right direction.
I too could use pockets of time to walk (not run though) when DD is at piano lesson for example.
Good thread Serrakunda

Though when I say 'hitting a ball about' I mean, I serve to her and she misses. She fetches ball, serves to me. I miss. I fetch the ball... and so we go on but we do jog towards the ball That made me laugh! Well done camp t
