A day late reporting in, mainly because I ache!!!!!! Not just from training, dreadful problems ---again---with my neck and shoulder. Having Osteopathy, which helps, but only once a week. Rather suspect that having the los to haul around, and cuddle, doesn't help, but I'm not going to stop!!!! So, 'training' Becoming slightly more difficult as recovery is taking longer, but I will stick it out

Back again. No, I haven't been washed away by the ginormous waves that have been surging over the prom--- have been a bit too busy to concentrate on here. Have just missed one day training, last Tuesday, as tiny one's immunisations took precedence (along with my aches and stiffness).
Distance increasing, speed decreasing, and I ought to have shares in 'Deep Heat' and 'Aloe Heat Treatment', but feeling a bit more positive again. As long as I complete in less than 7 1/2 hours I will be happy.

Have been away visiting the daughter who will be with me on the marathon, and my gorgeous youngest grandson, so have been away from the boards. However, just been catching up---and what a lot of difficult things going on in so many of your lives---makes my training look like a walk in the park! Had the chest virus at the beginning of last week---could be why I was slowing down, so missed early week training. Went out with my daughter on Friday and yesterday, still slower then I would like (my pace not hers---she can be much faster) but putting it down to the remnants of 'the chest'. Doubting my ability to finish the 26.2, but once I am there will do it. In 8 weeks time it will all be over

Hi imp Sorry for late reply. I can hear the self doubt. I hope this week with spring in the air you have your mojo back. You've done a marathon before so you know you can do it. Or is that a disadvantage ? Have a look over your training plan and see in black iand white your achievements so far. You are awesome and need to tell yourself that more often. The day of the marsthon is the easiest part in this journey. Every day of the 16 weeks before are the hardest. Organising the house, your family, your foster children, your carb diet, shopping, cleaning the list is endless and then YOU are training for a race that is so blasted hard it's an olympic event !!!! Repeat. My name is Imp and I am AWESOME...... I can't hear you ! What gels are you taking ? See this link in case you can't stomach the normal gels. womensrunninguk.co.uk/nutrition/alternatives-energy-gels/Or www.fellrunningguide.co.uk/baby-food-for-distance-runners/

cowgirl, thank you, thank you---just the encouragement that I needed
After a long chat with my daughter and osteopath I have been persuaded that I need more carbs in my diet pre April 26th, so yesterday I had a small baked potato. It might be co incidence, autosuggestion or indeed fact that today I felt much better during and after my 'short' training. Kept up my slightly faster than previous pace for 40 min non stop. This is still only 15 min/mile, but I am not displeased with that.
When I saw my osteopath for my weekly treatment yesterday she discovered that I have developed a slight twist in my mid spine, which is then affecting my right hip. Pain starts in the lower ribs after about 30 mins jogging. She is very experienced, and a triathlete herself, so I am sure that she will do all she can to get me as ready as possible for the day.
Doing 10k on Sunday, all part of the schedule, and actually looking forward to it---it's a good route, though more hills than London. I have done more than 10k in my training sessions, this is supposed to be a race but there isn't one that fits in, so have planned and measured a route to suit.
Thank you also for the nutrition links, I like the idea of the baby food, especially the one that he suggests----no sugar is very important for me as I know that it is sugar plus exercise that has unfortunate effects on my digestive system!!
Last feed for LO looming now, then a few minutes with a massage roller, some brief back exercises, a good application of Deep Heat and sleeeeeep.
thanks again cowgirl, you are in my team xx

Hi imp ! Glad to hear you sounding so up beat. I meant to add this link www.care2.com/greenliving/healthNow if you research further there are two schools of thought. Either having an Epsom salts bath makes all the difference in the world and the other says it makes a zero difference. I think a 1kg was ÂŁ7 or so. Give it a try. We are just back from my husbands long run (I met him after he'd done 8 miles) and he is totally converted and currently soaking in the bath. He is also despondent with his time BUT it's the spirit of the race. Remember you are doing an Olympic event ! I got him to say the my name is Mr cowgirl and I am awesome. We were coming to the end and he did increase his pace. Give that a go too. You'd be surprised what a boost it will give you. Carbs rule in this house and chocolate

My scheduled 10k today, in 1 hour 40, my best time yet, and it included far more inclines that we will meet in London, and some pauses to cross roads. Well pleased, should be on schedule for just under 7 hours

My osteopath is doing a brilliant job with my knackered back!! cowgirl, a 2 1/2 hour session next Monday (OH away on Sunday) and am feeling the need for nutrition now I am doing longer sessions, have a couple of the baby food pouches, will see how I get on with one and report back

Hi sounds like you enjoyed it Imp have you seen this www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/what-eat-when-running-marathonLoads of info on the net but I liked the few ideas this article gave. My running partner always munched nuts (Brazil nuts I think were her favourite) or granola bars & jelly babies she is younger & just much better than I so whilst I huff & puff she eats away. I can't take the credit for the follow 2 mantras as I met a neighbour I hadn't seen for a while * you are completing NOT competing And * a marathon is four 10k's and a long walk with the dog. I like his second mantra. You know you can do a 10k ...... Did you try the Epsom salt bath ? Hubby is convinced it has helped with aches & pans and we always walk at least 1/2 mile for cool down Have a great week & look forward to your update next week Don't forget to take a peek at all that you've achieved so far and what are you ? You are AWESOME !!

Haven't tried the Epsom salt bath cowgirl, bath an extra flight of stairs, so I stick to showers in our en suite! Banana, apricot and baby rice worked a treat on my 2 1/2 hour session (9.6 miles), tasted good and no adverse effects. Only 2 more long 'runs 'in the next 10 days, then taper to the big day.

Struggled today, Didn't do my long run yesterday as had had a very short night thanks to our tiniest one, so determined to do a 17 miler today.
Unfortunately wind very strong and it was like running into a wall, so only managed 2 lengths of the prom instead of three. 11.2 miles in exactly 3 hours. Not too bad I suppose, in the circumstances

This time in 4 weeks it will all be over and you'll basking in the glory you will have earnt & deserve.
Try this
"There will be days you don't think you can do a marathon. There will be a lifetime of knowing you have"
You know why you are doing it. Doing it for those that can't.
Can you PM me your just giving site again. On my phone I can't get old messages.

Here beginneth the Taper!!!!!!!
Just completed my last long session, haven't yet worked out how far it was, but it IS my last. Actually, have done two 3 hour sessions in 5 days, that is enough for me.
Now just need my tapering plan, three more visits to the osteopath, some longer sleeps (OH will take over the late night feeds) my daughter as my 'getting round' partner and the other runners and crowds on the day---then I will be at Horse Guards Parade for the 'you've done it' celebrations .

Morning imp Yes stArted his taper after his 20 mile run yesterday. He really struggled at 18 miles & commented he'd of been faster walking backwards ? but he completed it !!! Bit of a party atmosphere here last night we weren't quite doing the conga but it's such relief to be on taper. But ..... You'& hubby know (as experienced marathoners) that the tapers brings a lot of self doubt "have I trained enough" etc etc you have and you are both awesome My eldest was moaning last night ... Pasta AGAIN ! You bet buddy & you a it seen nothing yet ! Thanks for the link to your just giving page. Will sort over the weekend. Don't forget your Epsom salt baths over the next weeks oh and a decent lube for chafing try lanacane. Pricey but I think worth it.

I remain in awe of anyone running a marathon. as I said to imp the other day, 2.6km nearly kills me! (and I don't run all of that! actually I don't run any of it, I do a vague approximation of a slow jog but running it aint!!). good luck to you both.

Hi Imp how are you feeling today ? Hubby was doing his long runs on Fridays but is changing to Sunday this week so had an extra day rest. I hope you are eating well. I have just called my hubby to nag him to eat lunch We read an article saying prior to the marathon you should be eating over 80% carb in your daily diet - something like that anyway. I will be doing a weekly plan of meals to "carb up" my hubby. He will look like a sumo wrestler Once you finish your SECOND marathon tell us your plans. Glass of bubbly or chocolate bar ?? are you going straight home or will you eat in London.

Antibiotics kicking in, face less painful but feeling washed out---also impatient to get to the start line!!!!
Doing a brisk walk tomorrow, then a 4 mile jog on Sunday, 2 on Tuesday and a gentle 2 on Friday.
Eating is a little problematic with sore mouth and meds, but not doing too badly (though will be on a strict diet once I have replenished after the day!!!!)
I had info on a news feed with 'ideal' foods to have pre marathon
FIND YOUR OPTIMAL FUEL FOR RACE DAY
Creating your carb-loading strategy for the big race can have a significant impact on your performance. While it might be tempting to gorge on a plate of creamy pasta or a large serving of fish and chips, the quality of the fuel you choose is imperative.
To help you have your best race on Sunday 26 April, Pamela Nisevich Bede, MS, RD, CSSD, LD, a registered dietitian from Abbott's nutrition business and a board-certified specialist in sports dietetics, gives you five healthy foods to consider for your meals this week:
•Whole Grains - recommended for at least half of your daily grain allotment •Sweet Potatoes - loaded with Vitamin A and C, beta-carotene and manganese •Tart Cherries/Tart Cherry Juice – tasty source of carbohydrates that has been proven to reduce pain and inflammation •Beets - supplementation with beetroot has been proven to help athletes run one to two percent faster in races ranging from 5Ks to marathons •Tea - contains hundreds of bioactive compounds—including potent health protectors like flavonoids and performance-boosting caffeine
Hopefully, these superfoods are already in your regular diet, but if not, it would be a good idea to start testing how your body responds to these foods before you set foot on the race route – the “nothing new on Race Day” mantra still applies.
Wondering how to recover after you cross the Finish Line? Try a protein shake with some healthy carbs to help restock your glycogen stores and help your muscles begin their repair and recovery process as you head out for a much-deserved victory meal.
The cherry juice. beetroot and tea are definitely going to be daily intake from tomorrow. Carbs will still be porridge and baked potatoes, digestion really can't cope with much else
We are staying in London on Sunday night, have booked a table at the hotel for 8---should have finished by then!!!!!!! Hopefully I will be able to stay awake long enough to enjoy a steak. Better not have alcohol, or I will be straight to sleep.
Hope your hubby is also looking forward to the start, and will enjoy the finish xx

Carb loading, the fun bit!
When we get to our hotel on Saturday there were a lot of very sore looking Japanese who had just come in from the Marathon de Sables, some looking very tough, feet absolutley shredded.
Maybe the next challenge for you? Only 150 miles!!

Post by imp on Apr 19, 2015 16:10:54 GMT
NO chance serrakunda, this is the last time I 'run' any more than 10 miles in one go.
I doubt I will be anywhere near a tv camera, suspect they will have long gone by the time I get anywhere, but just look for all the runners in the blue MACS tops---and if you see an overweight 60+ trudging round, that's me!!!!!!!
