This entire academic year has been horrendous for Hurricane.
The school, which had been so good for him only a few years ago, made some serious errors of planning and judgement that meant a very rough ride from the first day back in September. There then followed disaster after disaster through lack of communication from school, poor teaching (one incident so bad both post adoption and I made a Safeguarding complaint about a teacher) and general disregard of his previously well met needs.
He struggled massively after several very successful years. He was able to verbalise some of it and managed to find ways to cope with some of the situations he was placed in but he suffered for it. We suffered as a family for it. (Tsunami was also having a very difficult time.)
He lost his appetite. He lost his smile. Every day after school he had an upset stomach due to the stress. His temper was on a hair trigger and his tolerance for anything but a very basic, boring routine was zero. It has been a long and sad year.
Last week, he had his final day there. He had been so desperate to reach that leaving day. Exams were very stressful and after such a difficult year he was completely burnt out.
Two days into the summer and I have my boy back. He physically looks as if a weight has been lifted. He is calmer, more verbal and his sense of humour is back. Long may it last!

Sounds like this was a horrendous year, but great credit to him - and you - he persevered and got through it. What a massive achievement despite all that's been chucked at him.
You have done such a fantastic job over the years, only two days at home and he seems to be back. I hope he can now recuperate over tge summer and for you to have some downtime together.
As always, hope you find time/space to recharge your own battery. xx

So so sad to read leo I get it 100% this was baa & skweek at their horrendous primary school... skweek was hit wayyy worse after baa left for secondary, he had a further year alone there .... Happily tho for us secondary was a breath of fresh air & they started to move on....
This is unimaginable at secondary & gcse year... So so awful for hurricane so much teenage stuff & exam pressure to contend with.... sending much calm for you all.....
I well remember skweek looking grey, sickly, bed wetting & anger 24/7.... like hurricane almost overnight after hanging in so long, counting down the days, he grew 2" overnight, was dry & finally smiled ( not grimacing ) for the first time in years ( excepting school holidays ).... You must also have gone thro such anxiety & panic attacks worrying about his mental health - I know I did for skweek.... like you ss too were powerless in all of it... I lost all confidence in so called Safeguarding as it did not protect skweek....
Hurricane will thrive now & open up to you perhaps...skweek did & in a way it helped to teach him to see patterns in his reactive behaviours that before he didn't recognise or understand...
Sending many hugs your way I hope you can all enjoy your summer ☀️.....

Sadly, GCSE preparation and exams themselves suffered hugely - but the LA have agreed to fund 1:1 tutoring for some subjects to be re-taught and re-taken (an indication of their awareness over how much he has been failed this year).
He has a fresh start in a mainstream school sixth form who seem like they really want him to feel safe and happy, and who sound as if they will support him well. Fingers crossed.

I agree with Flutterby, all credit to all of you for making it through. And for making home so safe Hurricane can bounce back like that. I hope the summer continues to bring repair and the new setting in September helps to fully turn the page.
