This will be a big year for us.
Simba will be 18 in July, we have our 10th anniversary at Easter.
Simba has done well, he has been happy at college and is applying for apprenticeships, he has his forms to apply for a driving licence 😱. Over lockdown he attended my mum’s church in Liverpool via zoom and joined their youth group. He has found a church here and is taking it very seriously and is thinking about baptism.
I will be 57 this year, I’ve worked on Covid at the DfE since the beginning of the emergency. Whilst nothing like the pressures health staff and teachers have been under, it has finished me off. I don’t want another role after this peters out over the summer. I will be mortagage free in May.
So, after Easter I will be making a fostering application. I plan to do some respite care initially so we can both get used to another small person being around. After that I want to go for long term fostering, with the intention that I leave my job by my 58th birthday.
Its been a long, often hard road with Simba and the complications with his birth family, though I am conscious that many of you here have had, and are still having, things way harder than us.
Reading this back sounds like I am saying goodbye, I’m not, I’m still here, even if the boards are quieter these days, it still like a second home to me
And I’ll be doing it all again before long !

Congratulations on your ten years Serrakunda and Simba. It is a tin anniversary and I remember needing a tin hat when we reached ours, thankfully you are in much better shape, even if it has been really bumpy at times.
It is amazing what can be achieved and it sounds like you have some fabulous plans to look forward to. I certainly went off in a different direction after the children became more independent and am getting lots of job satisfaction which is great.
I look forward to hearing about your celebrations come July. x

I have followed your story over the years Serra and it is truly wonderful to hear of Simba's progress on every front. What a great Mum you have been/are and what a testament to your love and determination over these 10 years!
I am impressed you have any energy left, let alone to do respite fostering - go you!!

We had of course hoped for little bro, I think I have one more child left in me. In some ways it will be easier, I won’t be working as well, and Simba has been my practice run, I know so much more now
