ooh brilliant! Have you seen the Australian Womens Weekly series - you get them in charity shops quite often. They are full of great recipes and really cheap. We love slow cooked lamb shanks, and we prefer shin beef to stewing steak! Another good spot for recipes is Jamie Olivers Home Cooking Skills website. I use it for kids at school and the recipes are always loaded with plenty of cheap veg. The Jalfrezi is delicious!x

♥ SLOW COOKER BALSAMIC BEEF:-4-5 lb beef chuck roast joint, 1 cup beef stock, 1/2 cup light brown sugar, 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar, 1 tablespoon soy sauce, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon crushed chili flakes, 3 cloves garlic, minced. Whisk together all the ingredients and add to the bottom of a slow cooker. Add meat joint on top. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours. Remove roast and shred with a fork, return to juices. Serve and enjoy. The gravy is delicious with mashed potatoes too!

♥ SLOW COOKER BAKED POTATOES:- Cover each potato in aluminum foil and place in slow cooker. Cook on low for about 8 hours. Load them up with your favourite toppings, serve with a big salad and dinner is ready within minutes of coming home! Best part is, you may not have to clean the slow cooker pot!

♥ CROCKPOT ROTISSERIE CHICKEN:- 1 whole spatchcock chicken, 2 tablespoons paprika, 1/2 teaspoons cayenne pepper, 1&1/2 teaspoons onion powder, 2 tablebspoons garlic powder, or 3 cloves garlic, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Place all of your ingredients in a bowl & stir in water by the teaspoon until a paste forms. Spray your slow cooker with cooking spray and place the chicken in, breast side up. Coat the chicken inside and out with the paste. Cover and cook on low 6-7 hours, or on high 3.5-4.5 hours.

Have never used the slow cooker for baked potatoes but will definitely give that a try!!! We both love them but there's no way. Starlet will wait an hour for tea when we get in lol.
Have made lasagna before, just the same as you would make it in the oven then leave it on low all day. Or make the bolognaise in the slow cooker and have it with spaghetti (don't even need to brown the mince if you don't have time). I know I used to make rice pudding in the slow cooker too as a student.
Mum always cooks joints in her slow cooker now - cook in stock and it just needs thickening to make the gravy later. Apparently on low heat for eight hours you can even cook them from frozen!

I always use brisket instead of a traditional beef roasting joint. It's delicious and tender, so kids love it! To spin it as far as possible, serve with big yorkshire puddings, masses of steamed cabbage, roast potatoes and mashed potatoes, carrots braised in orange juice, honey pan-fried parsnips and of course stuffing! I defy anybody to not be full! lol x

Today I threw stewing steak, chopped potato, marrow, carrot, pumpkin and onion in my slow cooker with a bottle of beer, ground pepper and some parsley. I stuck it on high at 7.30am and fed 13 of us at 1pm. It was yummy (though I say so myself!) - served it with roast veg and scalloped potatoes with a white sauce.

my ventures with a slow cooker were disastrous - either forgot to switch it on,or ended up with something that looked like a pile of vomit
or the Pièce de résistance was when my oven gloves fell into it (of course I spent days trying to find them) and kept getting cooked as it was plugged in to an adapter along with a lamp - so every time the lamp was switched on I had this smell of burning that I couldn't work out!

I never brown anything that goes in the slow cooker lol.
I normally use it by putting it on before work so we can eat when we walk in - normally chuck meat, onions and stock in.
Pre cook mash the day before and have some very fast veg like broccoli and peas :-)

Morphy Richards used to do a fantastic slow cooker which was a non-stick pan with a separate flat hotplate. It was great as you whacked it on the hob at high to brown meat then just lifted it onto the hotplate to carry on. Not sure if it's still available, but it was more veratile than the crock-pot type. x

I don't usually bother browning anything but somebody told me that my sausage casserole was full of willies (!) so I do sometimes precook the sausages. Today I had no time for that so in went sausage, apple, onion, potato, carrots, orange lentils, marrow and butternut squash. Thank goodness for slow cookers, given the day I had!

Hi according to Slow Cooker a revolution by American Test Kitchen which my American pal tells me is a bit like Which they say Brown your meat - sometimes There is no hard or fast rule about browning. Usually we found in recipes that used a lot of spice or aromatic ingredients we found we could get away with not browning. But there were instances for a deep flavour base we needed to use the skillet & brown the meat. With ground beef & turkey with few exceptions we found browning the meat was important so it was tender & not grainy at the end of cooking. They also when using onions often say nuke them in the microwave to soften them up. It also has. Delicious black bean chilli recipe I'd forgotten about which answer my earlier question about slow cooker veggie dishes ! ? Btw I once read Jamie Oliver article & he was making a posh lamb casserole & he said it didn't make a difference browning the meat. But I am still chuckling over the "willies" in the sausage casserole & for that exact reason I have brown my sausages Hth

Have recently bought a new slow cooker but it seems to cook really hot - does anyone know if this is normal for newer models. My old slow cooker never bubbled the liquid it was cooking but the new one does. Also, with the new one, even if I use it on the lowest setting, it starts to burn around the edges after about 8 hours. I don't know whether I've got a cooker with a faulty thermostat or if it's normal for newer models. I'm a bit nervous about leaving it on whilst I'm at work. Any tips / advice? MMx

Don't know as mine is quite an old one.
Does it not have a low setting?
Might be worth phoning the manufacturers and having a chat just in case you have a faulty one. Or maybe have a look atbthe reviews for your model on Amazon and see what other purchasers are saying. I usually read reviews before I buy anything to see what people think. If others are having the same problem then maybe just cook on the low setting?

Hi my mums is like this. Hers is like a fast boil on a sauce pan. When she borrowed mine recently she muttered that is was soooo slow !
I can't remeber which one she has.
I looked at various reviews of various slow cookers when mine broke & I'm sure I read that some people complained of this. I then inherited my brothers he bought from Costco so I never did buy a new one. My does bubble but iI've had anything so dry it burns the pan as my mums does.
Hers works fine & in a flash so it's great for her
If it's new & you have the receipt I'd take it back & at least get a replacement.
