Is it just me, or does anyone else who has children of primary school age feel completely exhausted and overwhelmed with 'cake days' 'make a scarecrow day' fetes, fundraising bingo, help your child build a space rocket , non uniform day, make a model of an endangered species challenge and more.....my heart sinks every time I get a cheery email or letter home detailing the next thing the school are doing and requesting my help/participation/ support.
I can barely keep my heard above water as it is. The though of the fairly bland school fete this Friday for example is filling me with dread and now I have to make a space rocket by next week! I feel totally useless at the moment, I just long for the school term to end so I don't have to live up to all these expectations.....

Every time I drive past Little Minnow's old primary I give a little cheer that i don't have to do any of that any more!!!! I passed a school sports day yesterday and just thought Thank God...Not me! I'm with you all the way. Although big school brings other problems the fact you are are not required to produce all the carp makes that easier to put up with. You are not a carp parent just a real one! Hugs!

secondary is much easier!
I'm afraid I cheated, I bought cakes, though M&S ones, went as simple as possible, or just refused to participate !

Those were the bits I could manage! Pretending we were normal, putting off the times that we clearly weren't. I thought that if I pretended to be perfect enough, I would make up for my children increasingly strange and unacceptable behaviour! We managed just about for most of primary school. Secondary school was another story - no covering up the children's difficulties there.

Looking back I too used to dread those days - I came up with Jack Stalwart continuously for book days for AS - jeans/t-shirt/rucksack......
The worst was about three weeks after they first arrived and went to school, Easter bonnet required...... AD would allow no help so went to school with a rather odd concoction of pink paper, tissues and a bit of colouring, how it stayed on her head I have no idea. AS went with a circular band of card with a hand drawn power ranger stuck on the front (said Power Ranger now adorns our Christmas tree each year as it fell off the bonnet). I can still feel my emotions when I saw all the perfect looking bonnets with chicks, flowers and eggs and remember bawling my way home from school drop off before giving myself a stiff talking to.
Now I can look back and realise how far they have come and smile to myself......

Very few days to the summer holidays... Just tough it out with bought products as often as possible. There will always be mega creative spendthrift mamas who churn out perfect costumes/ cakes/ bonnets/ space rockets. Minimal compliance is enough. Just occasionally, a piece of homework chimes with your child's passion and suddenly you will be like one of those perfect craft mamas. My son and friend had a volcano homework for year 7. It required making a model. Faced with having to find/ buy all the crafty bits and pieces, we cut to the chase with a cake volcano with larva made of melted sugar, strawberry strings and ganache. The addition of the friend, who was a lot more cooperative, kept him pleasant, and they actually had fun. It was an academic success, and was eaten right down to the tray. No doubt the crafty mamas are still having to dust the papier mache models made by their darlings

Ah yes - we got good at downloading things off the internet & putting them on a CD & taking internet music into school.
2nd world war songs with the lyrics for everyone to have a sing song.
My favourite was the Greek Day - children going in dressed in lovely Greek clothes , cooking etc.
My AD went in with a CD with Nana miskouri, Demis Roussos & the Zorba the Greek ( which gets faster & faster & faster) !! Hope they enjoyed it
