An amazing, insightful book about Aspergers, written by someone who really knows what is it like as she has Aspergers herself and was diagnosed 5 years ago aged 23.
Alis writes as if she is talking to a friend. Too many professional books blind the reader with professional jargon and statistics, but Alis writes from the heart of her own personal experiences and I love her additional comments in the grey highlighted boxes where she gives further insights onto how neuro typical people may observe things. Alis is a very gifted and talented eloquent lady who wants to share her knowledge in the hope it helps other Asperger people and their parents who want to understand more.
I had so many 'lightbulb' moments when reading it because it was as if she was writing about my 15 year old daughter who has recently been diagnosed and it helped me hugely to get an insight into my daughters head and how she views the world and struggles to deal with things I take for granted.
I think every professional out there should read this book. It should be compulsory reading for anyone working with, or teaching any AS child to give them an insight into the types of things Aspies struggle with and how even small considerations within the classroom could make a huge difference to how how they could cope with a school environment. Just being heard and acknowledged can make a massive difference and Alis speaks for those who may not be able to vocalise how they are struggling in such an eloquent way.
This book is an easy read as the text, diagrams and layout are exceptionally well laid out (particularily good for visual learners). I read it cover to cover in around 4 hours and enjoyed every minute. The best £15 I've ever spent. Can be bought from Amazon and I have purchased a second copy to give out to the people working with my daughter so that they can understand her better.
Alis's website below is a mine of useful information and the Curly Hair Project do workshops around the country for a very reasonable cost of around £16 per person. Tony Attwood has endorsed all of her 19 books all of which afe really informative, but it was her Aspergers and Me, life story, that I cannot recommend enough. I have been on some of the workshops and really recommend them even for parents of boys.
