have a vax cold water cleaner for my carpets and its quite good though also a bit scary when you see just how black the waste water is! I have a steam cleaner for my wooden fllors and that is supposed to do carpets but I've never tried.

www.amazon.co.uk/VonHaus-Multifunctional-Upright-Handheld-Microfibre/dp/B01306CWE2/ref=sr_1_17?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1466361576&sr=1-17&keywords=steam+cleanersI bought one of the above steam cleaners recently and it is FAB for cleaning wooden or tiled floors. Is really quick and easy to use and leaves the floors almost dry unlike mops and buckets. It only cost about £23 with about £8 delivery so for around £30 it is a bargain and is really good at cleaning floors. Part of it lifts away from the handle to form a hand held bit for cleaning baths, taps etc. I've not really used it for much of that as yet, but for floors it is FAB! It also has an attachment for 'refreshing' carpets. I tried it once and whilst it claims to kill mites etc, it didn't seem to 'clean' the carpet, there was no 'visible' difference so I wouldn't class it as a carpet cleaner, it's more of a sanitiser for carpets, but on hard floors it's the biz for a really good price as lots of them cost a small fortune.

Anyone got any tecommendations re carpets. We have one of the little ahndheld steam cleaners but its a lot of hard work to get any stains lessened and I wonder of a bogger pne might be better, or some alternative. Some of the stains we have a tricky e.g. Shoe polish and some unknown.

Like LOB we use a Vax which is great - and has lifted a fair number of stains. Admittedly we also use pre-Vax the Lakeland carpet cleaner. Not tried a steam cleaner as DH refuses - would love one for our wooden floors - although our cleaners do mop them every fortnight....

Thanks Gilreth, whats the issue with steam cleaners that makes your dh not keen? And re your final sentence, do you mean that the vax cleaners you have can do the floors as well as carpets?

Our Vax does to a level but not very well so tend to use mop and bucket if I have to do them. I want a steam cleaner for the wooden floors but DH not keen on expense which I can understand given the uncertainity we are living with over my job

We have a VAX Dual V carpet washer. It is much better than the more basic vax/vacuum cleaner we had before. As others have said the black water that comes out is horrifying !
