My AS is now 31. He suffered from ADHD and FAE. He has a long history of unemployment. However I always thought that, given the right opportunity, he had potential for employment. He is capable of working hard and is very good with his hands, practical, good at DIY, joinery etc. Over the years he has twice been given a Community Service Order by the courts and performed exceptionally well. He was a star attendee. He did decorating and fence erecting. They gave him glowing testimonials. Recently in Scotland he has come under the organisation 'Learn Direct'. What a difference! Through them he applied for a job and was accepted after quite an arduous selection process for a job involving refurbishment of businesses. Unfortunately it fell through after a sudden death in the family firm. I thought that would be the end of his chances but I have been proved wrong. Learn Direct then provided him with work experience over several weeks doing joinery work for community projects. He had quite a commute and was leaving about 6 am. Now, to my amazement, again through Learn Direct, he applied for a job doing industrial cleaning. It's a Polish firm and again he had quite a demanding selection process. He's not only been offered employment, he's going to be in charge of a small team of cleaners! I hope they speak English! Fingers crossed! Lily x

So pleased to hear DS has another chance at employment Lily.
Polish people have a very good work ethic and great that he has been given a position of authority.
Will do wonders for his self esteem.
Wishing him all the luck in the world.

This is an update on DS. Things are going really well! He loves his work. He has spent a month shadowing the employee who is leaving. They work long hours but there is a lot of variety. They recently cleaned the castle and the museum display cabinets. He says that the other members of his team are either Spanish or Colombian. I've offered to give him Spanish lessons!

Do you know what Lily these posts have really given me hope!!
My AS (only 11) is very practical too and has diagnosis of partial FAS but 'failed' the assessment for ADHD ;-) so perhaps similar to your son. Would love to have your comments on my knife incident post. Am I right that your son once menaced you with a lighter (you only have the one son?)
Some tough choices for us ahead possibly. Perhaps our AS will only get the help he needs if we draw a line in the sand?
So glad to hear good news about your AS. He and his partner are doing well with youngest child too aren't they?

I visited DS and his family yesterday. They have two children at home with them now - a 3 year old girl and a 6 months old baby boy. The wee girl has a nursery placement five mornings a week. They recently had to move to another flat as the landlord of their previous flat sold it. They have settled in well. It's not far away. DS is so happy. He has passed his probationary period at work and today is signing his permanent work contract with the company. It is the first time he has had permanent employment. LearnDirect deserve an accolade! There must be many others like DS who are capable of work but cannot compete on the open jobs market since they lack qualifications and work experience. He was showing me his special work cap and boots and high viz vest. He likes his colleagues. There is lots of variety. They clean holiday flats and student accommodation but also more unusual venues like the castle and the museum display cabinets. For the castle job DS was being picked up for work at 3.45 am! It's lovely to see DS now. He's glowing with pride, walking tall and feeling confident and valued as a member of society. And it is so good for his children to have a daddy who works.
Lily x
