Sylvanians....they both love them, Lapwing aged 6 and her brother aged 5 ( usually a spiderman boy) have played with them for hours over the last few weeks. Even chose to spend their Chrostmas money on yet more Sylvanian 'stuff'.
They are small world play consisting of families of animals including a mum, dad , daughter and son, in our case a fox family, dog family, rabbit, mouse and pig family. They have houses, cars, cafe's schools etc with lost of little accessories that go with them. I am utterly amazed that Peewit in particular loves them. Interestingly it seems to have inspired them to a 'gentler' play than when playing with dolls or human figures. Long may it last! Has anyone else has children engaged by these gentle little animal folk?

Yes, my birth daughters used to play with them a lot - particularly with some daugthers of friends who were a few years older than them.
There's a shop in London dedicated to them. I used to work somewhere near there and took the occasional trip up there at lunchtimes to pick up something special - particularly during the times when they were out of fashion and you couldn't find them in the shops.

DD2 loves them - she still regularly plays with them at 12.... I see it as a form of play therapy as, when I am allowed to join in, the storyline often reflects stuff she is struggling with in life and playing can help her to work through it.

Mudlark, I can only echo this. Butterfly has never played on her own until Xmas. Sylvanians appear and today she spent an hour! deeply immersed in play with me snoozing on the sofa as I was feeling really unwell. Older daughter was reading /keeping an eye, but no need. I had some proper rest and feeling way better now. It felt like a normal house for a change.

Dd2 has some yes, though mainly only plays with them when a particular friend of hers comes over. I feel sure I would have adored them as a chid so have often wished she liked them more so I could buy more for her!

Milly, I would have loved them too had they been around! And I agree Bop that they do use it as a kind of therapy, I sometimes wish I could secretly video their play as I am sure it would be very enlightening....I have come to the conclusion that the 'play' they do at home in a safe environment with each other , with me on hand just in case things get tricky, has been key to their slow and sometimes painful healing process. I am very glad to hear they might continue to enjoy them through until 12 and later. Wonderful.

Kipper loves Sylvanians too. He has the canal boat, the house, the tree house, 2 cars and a caravan and several families. They make a welcome break from Lego superheroes and goodies and baddies ( in which is always baddies and the baddies ALWAYS win) but unfortunately although he has had them 2 years now he always plays the same game - Sylavnians go on holiday in their canal boat down the river Nile, and their caravan which apparently is a specially sailing one. ( ) transporting all their paraphernalia piled up in heaps. When they get there they look at animals (his plastic zoo animals) and the babies get eaten by crocodiles.

That reminds me of a play therapy book I read where there was an example of a child who continually played out a scenario that always ended badly - a skilled therapist was able to help him change the ending and that was hugely healing for him - sorry can't remember more details...It maybe is in "Dibs" ( www.amazon.co.uk/Dibs-Search-Self-Personality-Development-x/dp/014013459X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1452538948&sr=8-1&keywords=dibs)

Bop, that's interesting as an idea...to help learn an alternative ending leading to healing... I will follow that link up.
Lapwing's stories always follow the baddie being bad and 'winning' not so much with sylvanians but with her barbies and other small dolls. Peewit just wants harmony and love and everybody to be snuggled somewhere with lots of barriers and other animals and cushions and stuff defending his Sylvanians.

Dd has had a family of sylvanians for a couple of years but was only ever interested in stripping off their oh so fiddly clothes...! Think I might try getting them out again.
