Food/snacks, toys and electronic stuff (I break the rule & allow use of my phone to play with), boiled sweets for take off & landing to prevent ear popping & games
Delay eating until the flight If you can
lots of distractions
Do you have a tablet/iPad ? Down loads lots of TV stuff to watch in departure lounge & then films on the plane
My kids approached flying the same as a long car journey. Weren't fazed by take off etc
Not sure of age of your kids but I take buggy through airside unlikely you will have huge delays but I liked the idea of buggy if LO needed a nap
Bon voyage !

Our saving grace last year was a fiver specifically to spend at the airport... She spent ages trailing round all the available shops to suss out how to spend it which passed the time nicely. For us it was the massive excitement about the flight rather than anxiety though, so it was about making the time go faster!

All the above plus mum with child A at the front of the plane and dad with child B at the back - seriously for us it's the only way. Bon voyage and have something nice yourself if you can!

Role play the whole thing at home first...This brought out lots of useful questions and chances for reassurance for our 2...security checks, police, xray machines were a big concern plus - they were worried about the size of the airport and losing us...didn't stop them wandering off on the day mind you! We were advised bright clothing, sick bags, travel sickness pills and a change of clothes too...Brains was reassured by this as he expected it to be like a roller coaster!

Hold their hands when the safety talk says, 'And your lifejacket is stowed under your seat'. Seriously! Not fun to move a whole row of the plane just before take off and then watch the poor stewardess struggle to put it back in place.
What worked for us was some sticker books, a Mr. Men magazine (that they never normally have so was hugely exciting and had stuff to do in it) and a new Mr. Men book for me to read when we were taxiing /waiting for the steps once we had landed. (Mine found this one of the most difficult parts as the anticipation had built up and then for them it felt like an interminable wait!)
We also did preparation - especially for the x ray machine and the possibility of being frisked (both need to be done without clinging to an adult). Something I hadn't thought about but wish I had was foreign airport police carrying guns - this is a particular trigger for mine but may scare others too?
Spare 'new' books/magazines for the journey home. Bright clothes for us too - and a photo of each child taken before you go into the airport on your mobile (to show the police if you really do lose them!) Favourite teddy in the hand luggage bag (mine panicked they would get lost or stolen from their suitcases - and actually they were handy to grab during those little wobbly moments).
Lots of reminders that you are coming home - and that they are too!
Hope it goes well for you and you have a great time with your sister.

Thanks everyone for great tips - it all went smoothly and boys enjoyed the excitement! Boiled sweets essential as both struggled with ears on the way down, not sure whether the sweets fixed the problem or were just a great distraction - but either way they worked! Flight on the way back was harder as the boys knew what to wait for (instead of being surprised by drink, snack and chocolate - you've got to love Swiss Air!) and therefore it all felt longer and it was an early flight and therefore a very long day, but all in all a success! LP xx
