Help....stuck with trying to decide what car for three fighting children and two parents, sometimes two dogs. Currently run a Toyota Aygo that is small and economical. Good for school runs but very tight if trouble brews...many injuries. We need reliability. Haven't any capital to speak of and it would need a finance deal from dealership as we only have credit cards, no possibility of bank loans. Ideas.? Looked at Toyota Verso a c4 Picasso RenAult scenic for the space inside it. But it would be,parked on opposite side of rd due to size. Our. Front yard is and was made rreally to stop the need for crossing with three kids intent on danger. Currently we can't get out for a walk etc together as missing a seat for dh. We had a berlingo that was good on space drove like a go cart and three together in the back made any trip a nightmare I REFUSE TO SIT IN A BACK SEAT ITS MY TURN FOR THE FRONT! IM 51 AND LIKE TO TALK WITH MY DH. GIVEN THE CHANCE NOT REFEREE ON JOURNEYS TOO.Don'T Wan t to buy a turkey.... IDEAS FOR A CHEAP 5 seater or big Seven please?

I hate all this car stuff so feel your pain - we have had a Renault Grand Scenic for 10 years and I have loved it - fitted everything in, extra children as well as ours over the years, plenty of boot space for dogs, shopping, allotment stuff, picnic stuff, beach stuff, husband when misbehaving........yes, things have gone wrong but what doesn't on cars - just make sure whatever you buy you can have serviced locally.
Good luck.

Oh b..... it. Just crashed the Aygo due to go back next week. Looks like my penalty payment has just got higher.... so we maybe looking at the bus service after all. That should slow us down a bit. Thanks to the woman who I had let out the junction only to drive mindlessly into her seconds later...she gave me a hug, despite her infant crying. Needless to say mine where all on board mucking about with shall/ I shan't I put my seat belt on? I think you're right Mooster it's a painful process not made easier by dh who is not alpha male decisive or worldly wise about cars, flat packs or wall plugs!

It sounds like your children have no idea that if you can not be quiet in the car walking is a very good alternative. This can not be done alone so let your husband put his walking shoes on and set child plus husband out of the car. After 10 km or so you will have a compliant child who will likely avoid this experience in the future. Repeat if they are slow learners.
That is my experience they know I mean it when I say I'll throw them out as I've done this several times the past.
A bigger car is unlikely to solve this problem, as they will just mess around as much if they have more space.

Yup Pluto....I have once stopped the car and told ds to get out (in our village it has to be said) and he absolutely refused to get out.
Did stop the dangerous behaviour though!

No my one did not either want to get out, but the advantage of young children is that you still can remove them physically from a car, a little lift and push will achieve this goal .

I've kicked Dd2 out of the car occasionally too. She is, or was (wants to walk to school independently from September) too young to be alone so I could only do it when DH was there too. Walking good therapy for dd's tantrums too, so all in all, a success. But usually I am alone with the kids or the journey is too long. Luckily tantrums in the car are becoming fewer and fewer.
Another tactic was to ban her sitting in the front for a month, and to make a point of checking the child locks were on in the back before every journey. This was after her new year threat to open the door on the motorway. She was dead embarrassed about it as we always give her friends a lift to Brownies and she didn't want them to know we used child locks.
And I only have one who misbehaves in the car, the other is an angel (in the car, anyway!)
A friend used to have two rows of back seats to keep her girls apart - they did lots of long journeys from Europe, but I'm sure that could be easily sabotaged by our kids ( hers are bc).

Wow this just reminded me of a journey with dds I had completely forgotten about.
They used to take it in turns, to one sit in back and one sit in front seat. One journey they were squabbling, 'it was definitely you who last sat in front seat, so it was my turn' etc etc this went on for quite a while. I calmly pulled into a lay-by and told front passenger 'to get out and sit in back', from then on neither were allowed in front seat again.
Now DH and I are trying to decide on new car that will fit everyone in including grandlings. With two car seats it only works if one is in front seat and one in middle seat, (can't fit two car seats in back plus a person) so LMB gets to ride shotgun, and me in back with TB and DB, thankfully TB is still too young to squabble yet!

Although we are only 4 we needed the extra seats for my parents. We had a Mazda 5. It was great. Rear doors were sliding & boy do I miss them. It was ok on petrol but not the best. Could of been our model or just I'm heavy on the juice. We now tow so movers up to a landrover. It's ok. Partner loves it more than me. I still miss the sliding doors of the Mazda. I think the Kia do a similar version to the Mazda 5 but partner preferred the second hand landrover. Old discussion but I found this useful www.mumsnet.com/Talk/cars/a1596031-Which-7-seater-car-to-buy

Thanks for your views folks it helped . I did it! After a huge talk and look around garages we decided second hand v cheap. Then I showed him the FAIRLY NEW Toyota verso I had eyeballed... it's big will get TWOCED, keyed or perhaPS violated by our family hit squad. We won't ever own it BUT I pick it up on Friday. So much for grand talk of buses and bangers...
