Me again.
This is old chestnut !
How younger son has never got an infection I don't know.
Over 2 years ago he fell over and the scab has never gone away. I never see him picking at it during the day but at night for example when I pop in before I go to bed I see him touching it. Occasionally I find spots of blood on the sheets.
I have thought of putting eczema gloves on him but when I put plasters on him whilst he is asleep he pulls them off. I'd need gloves secured with duct tape !
Any advice would be gratefully received
thanks

You could try something like Compeed blister plasters. They are designed to stay put

Sounds like a comfort thing.....odd I know, but it's been going on for a long time, he probably doesn't want it to heal.
I'm a hair puller, think it's just habit now, but it started as a need to 'switch off' and by pulling my hair out I could just focus on that, blocking out everything else.
I'm just wondering if there is something he could have to pick at that's safe to have in bed? Redirect his need to pick?
Don't think it will matter what you cover it with, he'll find a way. Any attempts to stop me pulling as a kid ended up with me very anxious and finding ways around it. (And no amount of threats of what would happen if I didn't stop worked) xx

A mix of sensory comfort (very loosely defined) stuff and habit I suspect. Can you and he together come up with something else that fulfils both the sensory need and comforts him to divert the habit in another way? I doubt tackling head on will work.
On the infection stuff, ours never did and I always reckoned they'd been exposed to so many bugs with the BF that they were immune to everything mother nature could throw at them! There is also evidence that raised levels of cortisol means greater resistance to bugs and so as your AS gets more and more comfortable and secure with you you may find the rate of infections actually goes up! (Just trying to cheer you up! :-) )

Agree with sooz ..Lapwing had a similar thing with picking at skin condition till it bled when in bed..sort of comfort habit... anyway we bought her a chew toy...the exact one was on amazon called 'sensory chew special needs' she is only given it at bedtime.. and it has to be kept by her bed ..it worked wonders...x

Thank you for your replies Had a long think about this last night. On reflection he was doing very well in that it wasn't getting any bigger. Then he fell over & had a few grazes but it's the one on his cheek that's the worse. Last night he was out like a light & then this morning ..... Scab picked off ! Grrr so I am now sure it is while he is asleep. Perhaps self soothing as you say. At 5 I can't give him his dummy back & anyway I doubt he'd take it. So I'm not sure a sensory chew toy would work. I've looked on the web & I will admit that I haven't been applying moisturiser during the day & every night so perhaps as 1 site suggests it was itchy. In addition he would never wear plasters. But we have worked very hard & so I will attempt again tonight to apply a plaster/dressing & see if he will keep that on for a few hours at least. We have been very softly softly in our approach & hopefully ihe feels that too. I dread him ever getting chicken pox ! On a slightly different note reading the various sites on scab picking reminded me on just how far he has come & how anxious our kids can be but don't know why. I'm doing a rubbish job of para phrasing but various sentences struck home Much to his disgust I showered him with kisses on the way to school

Well it's official. Youngest has impetigo
I'm not surprised.
Hopefully with the antibiotic cream & course of antibiotics it might calm down enough for him to reduce the picking so it will heal.
One area on his forehead has healed. Fingers crossed.
He is delighted at a few days off school as he is coming to the office with me. I am on my own this week so must go in. Meanwhile oldest is green with envy as his brother "isn't really sick" and "did it to himself".

Well the going to the office might not actually be "fun" You could always take eldest another day and bore him witless thus curing future bouts of jealousy? :-) Glad you have a diagnosis and solution :-)
