I must clean younger sons ears with cotton buds about once a week. I get about 6 dirty earbuds from each ear. You can see the gunk coming from his ears. so I was wondering if this is normal So I did a quick search on Google ....... Omg ! I feel the worst mother ever for using cotton buds on him ! I felt the computer screaming at me.

well yes.. what a bad mummy ! ..when I went and bought cotton buds as Peewit had earache.. the pharmacist shook her finger at me..and said don't use them on his ears he is too young! Ouch I felt scolded!
But on the up side.. I poured a very tiny amount of warm olive oil into his ears and left it there for about 2 mins while I massaged it down..well it seemed to work!

Another vote for the olive oil treatment
I have very bad ears, I go completely deaf in one ear occasionally. Bit of oil does the trick

Emm the articles I read also state olive oil is a no no "Only in extreme circumstances may I use a wash cloth to wipe his ear" Don't read the sites I read as you will be carted off like my self In fact that is all I am cleaning. Just the flap bits. His ears are so gunky I only need to clean the little dip/well you have in your outer ear. Cotton buds are in the locker medicine cabinet so we have no little "adventures " with them. The article was as if I was letting him smoke whilst I was cleaning his ear !

My EDD used to be like this when she was younger.
She used to have blackish earwax like tar in her ears. I too was appalled by it and worried that it wasn't normal but my GP said no, some people produce copious amounts of wax and some people don't. YDD was the complete opposite, had hardly any.
Funnily enough it was something that sorted itself out and nkw EDD has hardly any wax just a normal amount.
I think using cotton buds is fine as long as you don't go too far in as that just pushes the wax even further in and can cause blockages. Just remove the obvious visible stuff from the surface and leave the deeper stuff to work it's way out.

Thanks jmk. It's exactly as you describe & just do the obvious bits. He has had hearing checks regularly and deafness is when the telly is on

Dr at specialist ENT clinic in teaching hospital told me to use olive oil in Shrimp's ear I will write and let them know they are wrong... Sounds like here - Dr told me to alternate ibuprofen and paracetamol when DD had tonsilitis, but pharmacist refused to give me both for her as the official advice is you shouldn't give both at once! (I just got round it by getting the paracetamol under DS's name!) Never looked at their ears - does that make me a bad Mummy?

Hi thank you.
Can I ask stupid question about olive oil please.
Once you have put a few drops in does the ear wax disappear ?
You can see a lump of messy wax in his ears drum - hence my cleaning it with cotton buds. I just do the surface.
He has had his hearing checked & it's fine. Did I say that before ? Can't see pro jous posts on my phone

I think the olive oil just loosens/softens the ear wax, makes it less sticky, and it usually just falls out of it's own accord.

Yes the olive oil just softens it so it runs out. I usually put it in with a pipette while he's in the bath, just one or two drops per ear. X

Whilst at the doctors with youngests impetigo the doctor says he is going to take a swab for testing. " now little cowboy you know those ear things that mummy uses to clean your ears I'm going to put one in your nose very gently to check out those nasty germs" Eat your heart out Internet !! So even the doctor uses ear buds ! Vindicated. Meanwhile will try olive oil once I can find his ear under the scabs ! Thanks for the info by the way
