One of my daughter's distance learning tutors for GCSE posted to a home education list with some suggestions for supporting our young people who are approaching public exams (with all the ridiculous pressures that they bring with them these days). I thought they were great, so paraphrasing here they are.
Prepare a series of small rewards, as follows:-
You need a break as you have been working hard - offer to go on a walk, bike ride, play a ball game, whatever fresh-air outside activity would be motivational for the child.
You deserve a reward - iTunes card, DVD, etc.
You have learned something you find really hard - you are let off all chores for the day.
You have stayed cheerful - book or TV programme of choice, maybe comedy?
You have had a long day - new pyjamas and nice bath stuff.
You need motivation - a card with some personal messages/quotes/sayings.
You need something to look forward to - a plan for a holiday or day trip over the summer.
You need to celebrate - a meal out or favourite take-away or home cooked meal of choice.
I know not all these would work with the more damaged self-sabotagers, but for some of our children (the low self-esteemers and self doubters especially) I think it could work really well.

I will print this off for my BD fruitcake. She only has one exam (2 papers) but first ever so quite scary.

Mind you they are quite generous aren't they? Its the principle that counts though!

Are you sure this list is for the students? Looks more like a list for the home educators! :-)

YES! Rewards for the teacher/home educator - even more essential for keeping the show on the road! Thanks for the light-bulb moment, Larsti and Pluto!

You have stayed cheerful - book or TV programme of choice, maybe comedy? Yup, I'm still managing to be cheerful despite all the revision going on. im sure I'll enjoy a comedy

Yes it's the parents, home schoolers or otherwise that need the rewards!
My older DD has got finals for her degree coming up and frankly I think we should get a reward for all the moral support :-)
