Omg! I thought I was cheeky asking close family members for specific things for Starlet's birthdays and Christmas... Wow!

I wonder if the parents have some sort of special needs around social interaction? Seriously. The bit about the kid having 32 board books on his shelf - that doesn't actually sound a lot to me - and that he hates them reading to him. It comes across that they're doing parenting by the book rather than from the heart and relationship.
Feel quite sad for the kid now I've written that.

Yes you might be right Corkwing. The bit about no personalised gifts for use outside the house because its the biggest clause of kidnapping. Seems a bit strange altogether.
Another explanation is that they are compulsive declutters/minimalists and can't bear the thought of things being in their house that aren't used. I've read advice on some decluttering sites that says...'ask your family to give your child an experience (lie a trip to the zoo) rather than a toy'
But if you can't stand clutter....don't have kids!! Its the only way :-)

Larsti - That's actually good advice anyway. Apparently experiences are much better for giving us long-lasting happiness than things are (according to research).
