Hi All, Well, 1 year ago today, I met my gorgeous boys for the first time. They moved in on the 4th feb, so next weekend I would like to mark our first year together ... I just can't decide how! Any thoughts? We're going to Butlins in Feb half term with some friends (a surprise for the boys) so nothing too big. So far I have discounted ... - a theatre trip - there's nothing on locally that would be applicable - a weekend in the Lakes (I was about to click reserve at a YHA when I realised that as a singlie once the boys are in bed, I'm going to be stuck in a dark room for a couple of hours until my bedtime!) - trip to the zoo/beach/outdoor fun in general - too cold!
I'm in the North west (Greater Manchester area) any ideas?
Thanks all, lolapola xx

We tend to go for a meal as a family (and not tell them in advance as they can't manage the stress of it) but one your we climbed snowdon which worked as a 'milestone' achievement kind of a thing - they remember that one the best!

Well we went to The Gambia but that's s bit extreme!
We've been to edinburgh a few times and rented a flat. It's been marginally more expensive than a b and b but advantages are a kitchen, can do picnics and don't have to eat out every night. Sitting room with TV, DVD, don't have to be out all day. Separate bedroom so when the kids go to bed, you can at least sit and watch the TV in comfort or have a soak in the bath.
You can get flats for a few days in lots of places, I've looked at some nice ones in York, just not got round to going yet.

We keep ours very simple. A teddy bears picnic (with the teddies I bought them for introductions) - come rain, shine or snow. Mine are still very young at heart though so not sure if you'd get away with it.
What about a safari park if you have one near? That way you can mainly stay in the car if it's poor weather. I can only think of other outdoor stuff - dry ski slope? High ropes/go ape? Horse trekking?

We go down a slate mine and get the same piece of slate engraved with the date. Though sometimes wish it wasn't quite so far away. North Wales. But we go for the weekend

Thanks for all the lovely suggestions guys - I can't believe it has crept up on me so fast, I thought I had ages to plan the perfect idea ... and then I went back to work!!
Esty, The slate mine sounds great. Funnily enough, when I asked the boys this morning what / where they would like to go, GLF immediately said 'North Wales' as we went camping there in the summer. Where about is the slate mine - is it open all year round? We could easily manage a weekend. Lolapola xx

Google Ffestiniog slate caverns, you can take in the steam railway as well. Porthmadog would be a good place to look for somewhere to stay. Good fish and chips !

We go down the LLechwedd slate cavern at Ffestiniog. They have been really accommodating of Big Fish and have scribed our special slate happily and with full understanding of the importance! Look up Cae Canol Barn, its like camping in a warm place, half way up a tree and accessible. They were very friendly too! The kids would love it, overlooking Snowdon and the lake with trees and treehouses. The owners let you go all over their grounds. Its got heating and all mod cons but very basic and child friendly.

Hi Lolapola - we first met at a very similar time of year and are just coming up to our 11 year anniversary - every moving in anniversary we have given them a photo album with pictures from all the things they have done in the last year, it provides a lovely thing to dip in and out of and make memories and connections.
Hope you find somewhere great to go and have fun.

Hi lolapola - we had our 1 year moving in anniversary a couple of weeks ago - it was a Friday and we have swimming late so we called in at our usual hostelry on the way home for desserts. They each had the biggest chocolate fudge cake and ice-cream! Thankfully they knew went to stop (and Dh could get his share). It was nice and simple, familiar but also a bit different from anything we've done before. Congrats.

Lolapola, my avatar is us going up to the second lake of Snowdon on the Miner's Path last year. We took Big Fish. If your LOs are up for it its a great walk and you feel you have achieved something great. Just don't go up in poor weather!! Unless you are a seasoned walker. There were three seasoned hill climbers in our group, one of them was Big Fish ;-) who has been up to the second lake every year!
