Being the grand old age of 65 I now qualify for the free annual flu jab. I went along this afternoon to have it. The nurse then informed me that I also qualify for a one off jab for pneumonia and meningitis. I told her I had never heard of this one for people over the age of 65. I have never seen any publicity for it. Anyway it is now available - a one off jab that seemingly provides lifelong protection. So I had that done too. I thought I would mention it because many of you will have elderly parents or relatives, as well as friends and neighbours, who might benefit. I have certainly known quite a few elderly people who have succumbed to pneumonia. Lily x

It would have been the pneumococcal vaccine you had. Children now have it as part of their normal immunisation schedule and the rates of pneumococcal meningitis have plummeted since the immunisation was produced which is good news as the mortality rates and the rates of disability following this type of meningitis were particularly high.
More vaccines to come though - when you hit 70 you can get the shingles jab!
Hope you don't have any ill effects following the vaccines.

Thanks for that information LOV good to know.
No wonder they don't advertise it or they'd be inundated withnpeople queing up for it.
Seems a bit of a no brainer though if it is lifelong protection, surely it would save the NHS a fortune in elderly care if everyone over 65 had it as a matter of routine?

Also worth noting that is some parts of the country pharmacists are now able to give you the flu jab if you qualify for free NHS one. DH has just been trained to do this - waiting the local NHS board to sort itself out and give them the authorisation to do it. Some opposition from local GPS even though round here we are one of the areas where getting appointments is nigh on impossible. Lucky with our surgery but most of the inner-city ones are terrible - DH has real fun with them sometimes.
Hoping they sort it out soon so I can get mine without having the aggro of going to Drs with Sqk in tow.

I'd be interested in that gilreth. I'm eligible for a free jab as a carer but it's such a faff getting booked in that I geberalky go to tesco and pay!

And yeah DH now got his NHS authorization so tomorrow I get to let my beloved stab me in the arm Round here it is the majority of pharmacies from what he has told me. You need to qualify for it free - and have some proof of that. There are a few restrictions on whose they can do - DH cannot do my Mum's as she is free due to an auto-immune condition.
