Does anyone know if the rules for use of this are different for schools with academy status? I checked today to make sure dd is on the list for Pupil premium but as far as I know she is not receiving any individual or group support as a result of it. I was told by post adoption that I should ask how they are spending it. Before I start asking further about this I wanted to check that schools with academy status weren't exempt from having to do this so that I have the correct information. There do seem to be a lot of things that they are allowed to do differently. I was told that previously that Pupil premium for free school meals children was just put in a central pot and not allocated individually; so it could be this is what they are doing with pupil premium for adopted children. I know at the infant school I teach we have to show how the money is spent for each child though it can be used within the group or class providing it supports the pupil premium child; but we are not an academy.

No they are not exempt rosie. I was until recently a governor at an academy school (moved meeting times so had to resign as 6pm start impossible for me ) - and was the one who looked at pupil premium. The same reports have to be generated and Ofsted is very keen on making sure PP is spent well. However, yes the money does just go into a pot but they have to be able to prove to Ofsted that they are using it to benefit the children it is for. Schools all do it differently as it is just additional money in some ways but as a parent you can push to see how it is being spent.

My DS is at an academy. They definitely get PP+ for him. He is in the last year they will pay it (yr11).
The money is not ring fenced to your child, but you should go find out what they plan to do. My DS gets 1:1 time with a learning mentor after school one day a week.
Your child should be on their School Census return, October 2nd, for them to get the money. It will be paid retrospectively if your child wasn't in last spring's school census as adopted from care.

Thanks damson. I will definitely find out what it is being used for as I have confirmed she is on the list. I only spoke to the person in the office so will need to speak to one of the teachers who is in charge of this.

Tigger is now y11. Last term I enquired mildly whether they had any plans, as I had suggestions.
I had had an informal off the record discussion with a teacher who had indicated that at GCSE level it was hard to spend as obviously no lessons were missable to get extra help.
I then suggested some 1-1 history help and they offered some after school sessions, which really helped in the end of year exams.
I get the feeling that if you know what you want and ask for it, it is more likely to happen.

Nothing to stop them putting in more support to your DDs class... Our school is rather reluctant to make DS a visible recipient of extra help, but that is one of the ways it gets spent. Also used for extra helpers hired for a 7 week stint of 'exam preparation support' in the run up to GCSEs. I very much doubt that £1900 will be spent on DS, as he is presently working very hard and doing well.
When I had a thoughtful look on the school's website about pupil premium, it emerged that last year's extra money was £250,000 for the whole school. So one extra adopted child is about 0.75% of this year's kitty.

Thanks for the replies. I like the idea of extra help after school; maths would be great for dd; but I don't somehow think this will be an option. I must phone up and ask next week as I doubt it will be used for dd or her class unless I do.

Try SENCo or Inclusion Officer. Ofsted will be very interested in how children on PP+ have been helped. Go for the 1:1 after school if you can get it. We got to meet the man that does the 1:1 for DS, because the school had a 'meet the tutor' session at the start of this term. Really just to make all parents hop and skip to the school's GCSE results drive. Quite how I will check up on progress is another matter
