Hi,
LO has been placed for 13 months and is just 2. I am her primary carer and have just been informed that l have been called to serve as a juror in November! Now, l can appeal to have this deferred (which l plan to do) but my question to you is this, do any of you have any pearls of wisdom re: what l can say (as l have to write explaining why).
All the best

My DP has had this happen recently. We asked for a deferment in July as we cant manage in school hols, which was granted and the next date was this Monday. What I should have done was state a bit more fully on the original form why he would struggle with doing one or two weeks service. The court staff are very nice and helpful and once they knew the circumstances they did their best to accommodate. My dp was not picked and now won't be called for another two years.

I would write and explain about LO being recently placed, attachment etc. If you explain how important it is that she has one carer and how detrimental it would be for LO to be left with someone so soon after coming home, then they will probably let you off until another time.
I remember being called when I was pregnant with my BS and I wrote and explained that I would be 8 months pregnant by the time they wanted me and that I was happy to do it, but would need to be able to eat some snacks to quell sickness and would possible need frequent toilet breaks and they accepted that and didn't call me. That was 14 years ago and I haven't been called since.

Hi b11
Ask for deferment, and give very clear info re placement, also give your SW's/LA/VA details for them to check with - they won't - but if you have given that info there will be less reason for them to doubt your reasons for asking for deferment.
A dear friend of mine worked in dept that called Jurors - and some of the excuses people came up with to get out of it were hilarious - wonder why folk don't want to do it - it's not like we give out the death penalty anymore is it ?
I know it's not the right time for you but I am a bit jealous. I have always wanted to do jury Service and never been called. My big sis is on day 3, as I type, of her second stint.

I was called to jury service before my AC came, but my BC has lots of needs. I therefore wrote to explain these and got it deferred indefinitely, as I stated that unless they could find a medical person to care for my BC or get him admitted to hospital then I could not do it. Shame as I would have liked the experience. Good luck.

You definately need to mention more than 'childcare issues'. It's much more rhan that. I think like a previous poster said, you shpuld supply SW details etc and explain about the importance of one main carer being totally available during this crucial time.
I would imagine 80% of women will have 'childcare issues', so lay it on think! I think you'll be fine ;-)

My Big Girl who has severe learning disabilities was called to serve.................but I am not sure that being made to walk the plank or "prepare to die" ( her favourite quote from Maid Marian and her merry men" would be a suitable punishment to fit the crime, so I declined on her behalf!

I just stated that I would like to defer as I had an adopted child that hadn't lived with us for very long and that he needed more time with me and it was to soon to leave him with alternative carers. No questions were asked I just got a letter telling me to report for jury service a year later.

Hello, I wanted to say thank you to all the advice that you gave me. I have just received notification from the court that they have accepted the deferment and that l will not have to it until October 2014!! What a relief to see it printed in black and white!
