Had my pension statement this morning. I knew roughly what's there but I could have done without a bit of paper confirming that I won't be able to retire until I'm 67. I just can't imagine what on earth I could be doing at 67, even B&Q have introduced self service tills. I was at an outdoor nature centre a few months ago, we went into the restaurant for Sunday lunch. It was staffed by teenagers and over 60s. The service was good in that everyone was polite and attentive but talk about sloooow. Mrs Overall springs to mind
what do you think we will all be doing in our 60s

Don't like to think that far ahead, although it did dawn on me the other day that my Dad died at 65.5 years old and I realised that if I follow suit, I've only got 13 years left, that was a bit of a shocker to me.

Id be quite happy in a tent, as long as it was somewhere warm, and had an ensuite - too old for cold showers

I just miss the cut off for getting my pension at 65, by a few months only, sniff, but the prediction was only about £74 a week anyway and frankly i'm used to a higher standard of living than that would provide so guess in my 60's I will continue fostering. might need to start to take teenagers, lots of them, more lucrative than babies!! . and that way i'd not need a pension anyway becoz they'd be the death of me i'm sure!! but I do have a lot of savings, now sitting nicely in a little money pit of a house to let so shouldn't be totally destitute. I live in hope!

Pensions ..... I have a piddly little one from when I worked in the private sector before giving up work to look after our kids. Ex always used to say "don't worry - I have a great one and can retire at 56, we'll be fine" - hence plans to retire to France etc... Well he is now shacked up with his colleague who has an equally good pension and no kids to boot. Doubt I'll be seeing much of it.

It's not so far off for me now though I try to bury my head in the sand about it! Used to think I'd be happy to continue working till mid 60s but recently find myself looking for a 'get-out' from my job. A much older member of staff (late 60s) who moved to part time some year back is finally retiring next week. That makes me nearer the top of the list of 'oldest staff' which is a horrid place to be. My boss is in her 60s and not the best in terms of interpersonal skills. I can just about accept it from her as she's older but to be poorly treated or overlooked by a younger boss - not sure I could hack that!
So I don't think I'll be teaching then - my sort of dream is to work with DH in his business. I could do it now but the business couldn't pay me the kind of salary I have, so it doesn't make sense. But it is a fall back I have in mind - mind you, could lead to a divorce of course!
But dd2 won't be grown up till we're mid 60s so any sort of retirement seems a long way off. My pension is OKish but DH doesn't have one. (Could sell his successful multinational business of course, if it ever deserves those adjectives!)

In my dreAms (I'm not sure where I imagine the kids to be) dh and I are wondering around the world in the best campervan ever That sounds like my DH's dream - however we are young enough that his pension age is 69 (and mine is 68 for state & work pension). However he is private sector so is currently planning to retire at 60 (when I am 65) - however we shall see - Sqk by this point will be in his late 20's so hopefully independently living

I have one pension which pays at 60 which would keep me in reasonable comfort, for about 7 months of the year. One pension worth, wait for it, £453 a year, at 65, if I can hang on in the civil service for another 5 years, though not sure I can, I'll probably scarpe another few thousand a year payable at 65, which will means I will be able to scarpe by. Will definitely need the state pension to have any reasonable standard of living.

The ones of us with boys, just think how much money you save on food ones they move out, my teen is stick thin but eats like an elephant, maybe I can live from the amount he eats, he really does not get caviar and lobster at home or in 5 star restaurants. Beside normal meals it is brown bread and yoghurt with cornflakes topping him up.
To resolve my personal pension crisis by the time (what time?) I'm 60 I might start looking for a 97 year old millionair. Moo we can share him.......... And if Jmk comes to share as well, I am sure we soon be rich!

Well, I'm 65 now. Life is very different. I am really enjoying the opportunity to learn new things. I'm half way through a second degree, studying science with the Open University. At school I only studied science to O level. I've been attending computer classes for the last year and start on the ECDL modules this term. I can now use spreadsheets! I have been learning to play the piano again. I have found a lovely piano teacher. She is putting me in for the Grade 3 piano exam next Spring. I'm also studying for my Grade 2 music theory exam. I've also taken up art, acrylic painting. My sister has commissioned me to do two paintings: one of her dog and tortoise, and one of a chameleon.
The children are grown up. I see them regularly and we have a good relationship. Of course I still worry about them at times.
There are worries getting older: health, fitness, finances. I am trying to get all my affairs in order and have decided to start a prepayment funeral plan. I need to update my will, I have appointed a lawyer as my executor and have also arranged for power of attorney if I should become incapacitated. The future is always uncertain. I think you just have to make the most of the time that you have.
