both squirrel and howler enjoy w-sitting, and i have just been made aware that it isn't great for them and can be an indicator of different problems... www.pediatricservices.com/parents/pc-22.htmjust wondering if anyone knew anything much about it? thanks

Snooz wouldn't sit up as a baby but eventually kneeled or sat w like.
He saw a physiotherapist who said he had tight hamstrings which would have made sitting on the floor with legs straight out in front uncomfortable, but that the kneeling can also cause tight hamstrings.
She said it would be difficult to tell which came first with him, but she suspected the tight hamstrings put him off sitting 'normally' so he needed to do some stretching exercises.

It comes up in my books about sensory processing stuff, as possibly being a sign of weak lower trunk muscles, and being bad for the pelvic and hip muscles.

It is a real problem in children with Cerebral Palsy as it can cause their hips to dislocate over a long time and if it is very frequent. It also doesn't encourage their inner thigh muscles to stretch/lengthen. As a special needs Nursery Teacher I was encouraged, by the physio)to get children all to sit cross legged or legs straight out in front. If child has low muscle tone it can also be a problem.

We're just filling in a raft of forms to get a comprehensive assessment done on Monkey Boy. W sitting is mentioned on the sensory processing questionnaire. Still all a bit mystery to me....

jmk -sitting on the floor with legs bent out on either side in a kind of w shape...
thanks everyone... we have made bit of a game of shouting criss-cross/ straight/ straight and wobbly/ bridge to get them moving into differnt positions and nursery have done this game with all kids so as not to draw attention to squirrel and howler
im wondering if stretching out her muscles more might help squirrel she gets v tired legs v quickly... although i'm not sure of how much this is just in her 'why walk when i could be being carried/ i'm not walking like a mug when my younger sibs are being carried!

Don't have much to add, but just remember my nephew always sat like this and was later diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy so could well be a sign of muscle weakness.

30+ years ago I was told not to let my daughter W sit as she had mild CDH (clicky hips) and this posture exacerbated that condition

Aaaah thanks for the clarification and pics.
Looks most uncomfortable and yes you must have weakish muscles to be able to sit like this I would have thought?
Do you have a trampoline Choti? Great for strengthening leg muscles.

tiddly bubs and my daughter both sat/sit like this on the floor, both are hypermobile. my AS never did even though with down's he is also hypermobile (or rather has low muscle tone). got a picture of tiddly bubs from her aunty the other day, now 3 1/3 years old, still sitting like that, and my daughter, at 23, also did it while she was here in the summer, told her off and said that its bad for her knees just becoz it looks like it would be.

Whenever I sit on the floor I always sit like that and have done ever since I can remember. My niece also sits like it. As far as I know neither of us have any medical reasons for it! I actually find it very comfortable.
