Well we are well past the one year anniversary since the AO and over two years into placement. A few weeks ago I recieved a message form Poppets SW, saying that 'they' had 'found' some money belonging to poppet that was given to her from her BF. DH and I are quite suspicious....why has it taken this long to 'find' it?

Open a bank account in your daughters name and tell them to transfer the money to that account than you can always later decide or it is 'hers' or will be used for her education, an expensive hobby etc. Depends how much it is I pressume

What exactly are you suspicious about? I may be biased from my experience but Lot A record keeping and filing can be pretty poor, maybe all that's happened is someone was tidying up, found something that had got paperclipped to the wrong file or piece of paper.

Originally , I thought it was an 'oversight' (being an LA and also being a teacher I can understand why these things can be over looked).
However, when I asked for a cheque to be made to poppet, I was told that it had to be a direct payment to an account in Poppets name (errr what is the difference?).
We are suspicious as 'why' are we not to be trusted as her parents to bank a cheque in her name into her own account?

It's possible that they don't have a cheque book anymore.

Once we had managed to track down ds2 's child trust fund( an epic story in itself), and had an account number for it, our la said they had money to add to it, as they put a sum into child trust funds, for each yr the child is in care. They originally asked for the account number, but the building society wanted the actual trust fund code which we didnt have so the council finance just said they would send a cheque in his name, which the building society happily added to his account. But the default option for the finance dept. was a transfer, think its just easier for them, in terms of the admin.

We have massive security issues....
I rejected the child trust fund monies on their behalf coz there was the usual 'scares' about children '& adoptive families being traced because of it.... Call me paranoid call me old fashioned I don't care which the less information ' out there ' shared the better in my book!?!?
I guess it could be o.k. & I think cheques mean more work ss end... I am just anxious coz with a bank acc in poppets name there is always a paper trail to your home address.....
Don't mean to be a prophet of doom

Looking at it from an audit perspective, "this was money given to child X. Why did you send a cheque to adult Y? How do you know they spent it on X?"
Might be as simple as that.

Could you ask them to do it via ss, they give money to ss, who give it to you, then you don't have to reveal her current name?

We too have security issues, but I suppose the thought of a leak never occurred to us as the finance dept already have our sons' name, since we get adoption allowance. ......

Chotimonkey's suggestion seems a good idea.

Re the child trust fund, I find that very interesting..
I have just tracked pinks down and HMRC wouldn't even give me any info until the adoption order was granted, plus we went them a copy of Pinks adoption certificate.
So, if its transferred into the childs new name, how would the birth family get the info? Pinks birth family don't know her new name.

That was my thought swimchic, his child trust fund yearly balance statement had been going to the birth parents every year, which seemed crazy ( and possibly upsetting for them) i had to contact hmrc to find out which bank or building society had the child trust fund ( if any) and bring adoption order, his new birth certificate, and passports ( mine and his) for identity before the building society could change the records, but now its in our name and address, so next statement will come to us..the banks are very tight on security as a general rule ( note the difficulty pursuading them we are the appropriate adult in the first place) but once they are pursuaded, well they do have procedures for adoption etc
Bserene11-As regards a payment from birth mum, its rather unusual, i am surprised it is even allowed, but given that it is, it needs to be seen by your child, in the future, , as having been properly invested, so i would be inclined to accept paymnet and deposit it straight away. Sw can be less reliable but as the money has come from bm, i cant see why that would cause problems as its no reason for your address to go to her, just to finance. If worroed, i would be inclined to ring finance dept and just check they have your address correct.
