Does anyone know if having your child living in part time college lodgings would affect claiming child benefit/ tax credits or adoption allowance? We're thinking eldest might manage a 3 or 4 nights a week away to save a long bus journey but just trying to work out how that would financially impact us because it would cost us more for him to live away rather than less!

As long as your child is in full-time education you are entitled to child benefit and tax credits. I have never seen it mentioned anywhere that they have to be with you full-time. Otherwise people who are divorced and children staying with ex on a regular basis, say weekends, would be affected too. Really cannot imagine this being the case. As for adoption allowance, I would not know that, but the child remains in your care, so why should it change - and do they have to know in the first place?

That's helpful thanks. I assumed that was probably the case but didn't want to launch in and then find that we were losing money in one direction and spending it in another!
