We had a meeting with the new educational psychologist involved with dd1's secondary school this week. Well, she well and truly talked the talk! She knew all about early trauma, swore by the Louise Bomber book "Inside I am hurting" and, best of all, told us the LA are rolling out an attachment based approach in all their secondary schools - and that dd's school has embarked on the training. Not a moment too soon, of course!
They are nurturing and lovely in many ways but have no idea of how to have a coherent approach and their communication is so poor even some of the staff have complained about it to us! She described exactly what dd needs for her social / emotional issues. Now we will have to wait and see if the school can put it into practice....... Luckily we have another meeting arranged in about 6 weeks with ed psych, senco etc so we can keep putting the pressure on, for now anyway. So I am pleased (potentially), but came away feeling so sad for what hasn't been done and how dd has had to suffer because of it - bless her, she is so resilient to put up with the carp she gets from other pupils. ('Supportive peer group' was one of the things the Ed Psych said dd needed - too right!)
On a brighter note, we also went to dd2's parents evening and were pleasantly surprised. Now dd2 always gets glowing reports from school, so we weren't expecting anything less, but were delighted to find that she is now achieving ABOVE the expected level for her age - she has always been a good average up till now. And I have always suspected her capable of better - it all seemed to come too easily to a child who has suffered early trauma plus has a summer birthday. Dd herself even asked us to tell her teacher that the maths was too easy

Have now had the Ed Psych's report on dd and her suggestions for what needs to be done - latter are fab. Thanks goodness at last someone can see what dd needs and what the school should be doing. It's sad though, because she did a self esteem assessment with dd and she scores low on everything, poor baby. Now we have to wait for the meeting with Ed Psych and school later this week to see what they have to say......

Good to hear your dd's is doing so well. And that.a significant professional understands the issues.. For us, with similar.self esteem issues and a high performer at school, it rang a bell. We have always found educational psychologist much more aware and helpful than CAHMS .

Sound like great developments all round.
Even at age 5, my AD's self-esteem issues have been picked up at school. It's sad for our children that they struggle so much with this, isn't it?
But the right help can be such a massive support - transformative even.
Hope the meeting goes well.

Good that they're getting it. The right school and being supported and understood - your child and you - makes for a much easier life.

Finally found out what the school have planned. It's not earth shattering but definitely steps in the right direction. At least they fully recognise her emotional and social needs. It's all to be reviewed quite soon so good to know they will be monitoring what is happening.
