My Stig is getting awfully big for his special needs buggy. I know I should contact the OT dept to ask about where we go from here but it's not an easy thing for me to do emotionally. Stig doesn't use the buggy all the time. He manages pretty well indoors (at school/museums etc)and even outdoors (in parks, playgrounds etc) as long as he can take regular rests, the ground is even, the area enclosed and there are few distractions. He can manage a very short distance along an uneven pavement alongside a busy road (not without discomfort though) but, when we go anywhere much off the bus route, then he uses it. I've been getting round the problem of his increasing size by avoiding going to places not on bus/train routes but at some point I am going to have to face up to the fact that Stig needs a (deep breath) wheelchair. I think that while he still uses the buggy I can pretend it's temporary (all kids grow out of pushchairs don't they). A wheelchair underlines the fact that he has a serious problem with walking. I know I'm going to have to 'get over this' but it's emotionally very difficult. Don't know why I'm posting this really, just feel the need to put down on 'paper' how I feel.

Have a look at the hippocampe. It's an off road w/chair which is dead trendy and cool and goes anywhere. My son is too disabled to sit in it but a friend's son has one and loves it. It's awful when you realise new limits or needs and I think most parents grieve for each one.

He'd love it - makes me feel better about the whole thing. Not sure how practical it would be for the bus though.

The handle comes off easily and it packs in to a small bag as the wheels come off too. Friend has taken hers on buses, trains and even flown with it. It is an excellent chair.

Stig's special needs buggy was supplied by the OT dept. How would we go about getting the hippocampe? How much would it cost?
I showed Stig the video and he loves it.

If he'd get a buggy from wheelchair services they could possibly give you a voucher towards it. Otherwise charity funding. I will look some up later and post the link

Look at ebay secondhand. Look at www.bettermobility.co.uk and they come up with a list of funders. I've had funding from The Elifar foundation before. There is also the Caudwell Trust, Variety Club, etc. I know it goes against the usual wish but pile on the info about mobility and adoption. Don't paint the best picture paint the reality. Do you have a friendly OT? Get him/her to write letter of support, or physio, Dr or school. Hope this is of help. Esty

That's great. Thanks for all the info. I'll make some enquiries. The loan idea is VERY good. Give Stig a chance to try it out properly. Will let you know how we get on.
