Suddenly feeling a bit overwhelmed by it all. Lots going on. Some of Simba's autistic behaviours are becoming more extreme, particularly the chanting, squeaking and screeching which at times is so over the top. I don't think it's a stress thing, it seems that the more he is relaxing and becoming more secure the louder, more high pitched, the more prolonged it's becoming. The people he spends most time with out of school are also becoming more aware of it. It's like the real Simba is coming out.
lots of worries about school, current school don't seem to want to engage with me on the sensory issues I've identified, head sniffed a bit when I told her what I've been reading. They refused to put some things in the statement on the last review. He doesn't make much noise at school so not much help there since the failure of the egg timer experiment. A lot of the kids in the school are non verbal so everyone signs as well, no real problem with that as a collective thing, but at a meeting in school recently which Simba came into , the head signed to him, he communicates very well, as an individual he should not be signing. He skips through his homework in 5 minutes, he is reading Roald Dahl books at home, more advanced than the school scheme. He is much more able than most of the kids there so not convinced he is being challenged enough. Placement at mainstream is going well, he's made a few friends though we haven't started any academic sessions yet.
I'm not happy about the secondary special school provision, there will be three broad spectrum schools, no real choice. Not convinced another broad spectrum school will serve him best but mainstream is a huge gamble. Certainly can't contemplate taking him from a school of 75 to 1000plus secondary. There is a smaller school, 'only' 600 pupils but still a big leap. I've asked around and had mainly good feedback about its sen provision so going to have a look round in a few weeks. Simba is also July birthday so being youngest in year won't help either.
At the moment I can't seem to give Simba enough love, he wants to be reassured constantly all the time that I love him,I can't say it enough, or give enough hugs. Even the cat has turned into a screeching ball of fur, tearing about the house, Simba of course has to imitate the cat noise so I get squeaking in stereo.
ive got a few plans in place, stumbled across a sympathetic GP and having a consultation this week about the various diagnosis, autism West Midlands have a few events over the next few weeks which cover some of the issues so I'll go to those.
he has so much potential, he has high hopes for the future himself, just don't want to stuff things up for him.
