Dash does not have Tourettes BUT even early on in placement I was Googling Tourettes Just wondered if siren sounds are a symptom of Tourettes? I always thought it was some sort of pretend play thing but I'm not so sure now. He is absolutely brilliant at sounds, to the extent that once when we'd been on a steam train and watched the train puff away down the track, he did a very loud train whistle sound which had people looking for where a train was He used to do roaring and woofing but not so much lately. Just wondering. Sorry hardly on and then come on to ask a question. Love to all Larsti xx

Hi larsti
I'm still keeping my eye on this one too.
Ds has motor and verbal tics, they wax and wane but he's had the motor tics since about 2 years old, the verbal since about 4. The verbal ones are far more frequent than the motor ones now, but only really consist of grunting, throat clearing and 'yes'. He doesn't shout out but there are different types of Tourette's. Tourette's Action is a great website, they have a forum you could ask questions on.
Ds also has echolalia, although this comes and goes too.

hi larsti part of my son Tourettes is to howl like a wolf and bark like a dog. all very loud and more prone to it when stressed or tired as much is now controlled by meds. he tends to have more body tics now.He has no control over them and have learnt not to say anything if I do just exacerbates the problem.
I did work a couple of weeks ago with a girl who had the swearing kind but it was so quite you almost missed it

Thanks both That website looks really good Sooz You both mention physical tics. I had forgotten the link there. Dash had a facial twitch which we hardly see anymore. I am wondering now whether some of Dash's unpredictable behaviour is more Touretty than anything??? I don't know kicking thing and eg punching cereal packet at breakfast and sending it flying. Biting/shouting in ear And what is the overlap between sensory seeking behaviour/ADHD and Tourettes? Just wondering aloud again. He is just Dash but trying to make sense of it all. FAS thing pending as you know. L x nd

Hello
interested that you posted about Tourette's. Kipper suddenly barks or roars, it's VERY loud, and VERY sudden. It's only noise, not words. He has got a dx of sensory seeking also.
Sorry I can't remember where Dash is at with assessments, but have you wondered about ASD? Kipper has a dx at present of Social Communication Difficulties ( I.e he doesn't tick all the boxes for ASD) but they are watching him to see if it is ASD. Tourette-like behaviour can be part of ASD.
Do you have the book "raising a Sensory Smart Child"? I have it to hand so I thought I'd have a quick look. ...it has a section on the possible causes of Sensory processing problems and outlines conditions that it can look like or overlap with, including Tourette's! fragile X, FASD, ADHD.
On Tourette's it says the tics have to be present always - I.e you would never get as much as a 3 month period without it .
I recommend the book by the way, for the sensory stuff.
Sorry if you know all this already!

DS can make all manner of repetitive noises, but they so so so much better with ADHD meds. DS is also ASD, but given that medication works on the noises I would say it's the ADHD. DS also stims/makes odd movements, but this is his ASD. He has been seen by a tic specialist as he used have massive prolonged episodes of tic-ing, but it's his ASD nothing else. They are called motor stereotopies. I know a few ASD kids that bark & howl or are fab mimics of any noise. Just thought I would throw that one in too

I have a neigher, as in horse. Also occasionally a barker. Frankly I'm dreading taking her to see Lion King!! She's ASD too.

Donatella Thanks again all I think I've got that book...somewhere! or something similar :-) Feeling discouraged because we had some homework (more info needed for FASD dr) and that was before Christmas. One of the things was growth charts of baby and toddler Dash. Finally asked GP today but she doubts if they will have them. Will check written notes. We have NO red book!!! She said maybe hospital records might have something. Surely if a child is premature and has signs of intra uterine growth defiency SOMEONE would keep a record of growth, not leave it to the helath visitor/red book which BM has probably kept as a souvenir along with photos of Dash before he went into care......HIS photos.# I am going to explode in a minute As I understand it Dash does not tick all the boxes for ASD or ADHD and without all the info the dr CANNOT diagnose full blown FASD (partial FASD) was mentioned...partial something anyway!! But we await the full report. More info was wanted in January Then we were going to ask for further info from birth relative we have contact with but on reflection thought it would compromise our relationship with them obviously can't say more...probably said too much already

On a positive note, we have acquired a card which enables us to access special needs activities locally, subsidised by LA. No diagnosis necessary I just said he is developmentally delayed. one to one swimming lessons, special needs football and horse handling all provided Much to be thankful for in the day to day

Hi Larsti Sorry to hear of all the frustrations with getting the paperwork you need for dx for Dash. The swimming, horse handling and football all sound good, hope they help. (My AD would be SO impressed with your avatar and with Dash's name by the way,...she loves the Incredibles, and mainly for Dash who she would 'actually' like to be, she informs me hugs.

Thanks sivier Feeling very weary at the moment Interesting that DH mentioned Tourettes to me the other day and I said I had just posted about it. He has been so busy though I haven't got him to read this thread yet. I say busy...but what happens is, he/we are busy and then when we've got some time we try to do something nice not talk about Dash!!
