Hi, I got a really odd letter from my bank saying they couldn't provide the information I'd asked for as I needed to give them more information! As I hadn't asked for any information from them I wondered if it was a dodgy letter. Then I wondered if it was my SW...
I gave her so much paperwork plus was a bit stressed in my first home study visit that I can't remember her saying anything about getting credit checked or needing to contact my bank. I had to give her 6 months' worth of bank statements but I wondered if any of you were credit checked by SWs or had them contact your bank?

Not credit-checked nor did we have bank asked. Just had to provide statements and proof of where we were financially.

sounds very dodgy to me, I would contact the bank and query, dont use any of the contact information on the letter, go to your branch
apart from the fact that a bank shouldn't provide information to a third party about you, someone has written to you claiming to be the bank asking for information from you. I've had numerous emails requesting me to confirm banking information, they look very professional and genuine, the logos are accurate, usually given away by the fact that I either didn't bank with that particular bank or some very peculiar grammar or spelling error

We have recently adopted and had to provide bank statements, wage slips, account for outgoings/ in comings, savings, etc but no-one contacted our bank
Doesn't sound like sw... I don't think anyone is allowed to access your account for anything you haven't given express permission for... If double check on your normal bank number, or their fraud number, not the number given on this recent correspondence... Always best to be on the safe side

Sounds dodgy to me.
I agree with Choti - don't think banks are allowed to give out information without your permission.
NEVER give any details over the phone - go into your branch and speak to a legitimate staff member face to face.

I have recently been victim to fairly major identity theft involving banking fraud, had 35 grand removed from some savings accounts. never answer a letter/email/phone call saying its your bank. always ring them back on a genuine number (not one the letter/email etc gave you). if internet banking always type in the url direct and don't use a web search to do it or keep the url in your bookmarks. I even refused to speak to the fraud squad dealing with the claim when they rang me and called them back later on a number I already knew (it had been them but i'm suspicious now!). if you don't use telephone/internet banking make sure you ask for these options to be disabled. my faud was done via phone banking and I never do it by phone so is now disabled.
long story short, find a definitely genuine number, call them and ask if its genuine and if not they will investigate it for you. sounds dodgy.
ps, got all the money back very quickly, new passwords, virus sweep of computer, sorted!

We had to supply bank statements, household utility bills, wage slips, they did not and should not contact your bank direct..the only people they contacted direct with our consent were our employers for a reference. If in doubt phone your adoption agency or LA if that's who you are going through and ask them if they have tried to contact your bank. the whole paperwork stuff is very stressfull..particularly if you hate paperwork which I did! good luck.

In stage one we supplied everything that's been mentioned but the LA have also written to the bank to confirm our mortgage to. The bank has been a pain and will not respond unless we send certified copies of our passport and drivers license along with a letter giving them permission to give the details. Even with that they have dragged it out for almost tow months. Luckily we have gone to stage two based on our statements but they will not take us to panel without and the bank is taking their sweet time about replying. So frustrating.

We supplied a statement but they want the bank to complete their own form and send it back. A real pain!!

That's really odd - my SW seemed quite happy with my mortgage statement. The differences between some LAs etc are really strange. I found out that the letter my post was about was mistakenly generated by my bank re PPI. As a result it spurred me on to look into PPI & I got some money from my bank!
