Hiya
Does anyone know whether Zippy will be entitled to free school meals? We think he must have been having them while in foster care but wasn't receiving Pupil Premium at all... he is still a LAC until the AO so we think he should get PP and free school meals but not sure how to go about it... meeting with school so would be good to know what we are asking for!
Thanks in advance, Ax

I don't think so as they are kind of means tested.
My EDD is in care and she doesn't get them as a LAC, because presumably they know she is getting a hot cooked meal at the end of the day, at the care home, and she does get pupil premium.
Think it is more for those children where they suspect the school meal is the only cooked food the child is likely to have.
Not sure but I suppose you can only ask.

I don't get them and he won't get PP for this year either - it's done via the census in January of each year, when schools do a "Head count" of who they have in school in time for the April income from the government. He will get PPP next year though :-)

I asked when LO was LAC as the guidance stated that children Foster Carers' care aren't entitled as the FC receive an allowance which includes the cost of food. I felt as if we were doing the same job pre-AO and we didn't get any sort of allowance but we were told we didn't qualify. MMx

Free school meals are a means tested benefit, but the level of household income is I believe very low.
From www.gov.uk/apply-free-school-meals
If you get any of the following support payments your child may be entitled to receive free school meals: ##Income Support ##Income-based Jobseekers Allowance ##Income-related Employment and Support Allowance ##Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 ##the guaranteed element of State Pension Credit ##Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190) ##Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit ##Universal Credit
Children who receive a qualifying benefit in their own right are also allowed to receive free school meals.
If you do get it, it's a great gateway to other benefits, I think.
As an adopted child / Looked After he will get pupil premium plus from April 2014.
These two things are independent.

if you are on a low income you will surely qualify for free school dinners - it doesn't matter what happened in FC just what you earn now
