Hi Hope someone can help ... I'm not really sure of what the educational difference between preschool and nursery is.
Lo does two, short mornings at a v small, lovely nursery where she feels v safe, she is due to start school in sep 2015 and I was wondering whether if is best next year to leave her where she is (my instinct is to leave her there as she is thriving) of move her to a per school to get her used to school grounds, uniform, meet some other children etc...
The other option is in the last year to keep some nursery time and have some preschool... But I wonder if that would be too confusing.
Any suggestions/ explanations v welcome l Thanks

Everything toko says is true BUT what I would say, with girls particularly, is that friendships are formed quite early on, girls tend to be more cliquey which makes it harder for newcomers to break into those circles.
Are any children from her current nursery starting pre school at the same time as she's due to start? If she misses that year and then rejoins in reception then it might be harder for her to claw back those friendships.
I guess ultimately it depends on whether the benefits of staying where she is and, possibly, having to make a new circle of friends if her current ones are moving on, outweigh what she may gain if she moves on? Continuity of a social circle being quite an important one.

Hi there chotimonkey,
My LO will be starting school at the same time. He is currently doing some time at nursery and some time at a preschool. And, he seems to be managing the fact he is in two different settings OK. The school catchment for the nursery and preschool are different so I did this with similar thoughts to you about him getting used to school environment etc.
With the nursery, they have different rooms for age of child, so he will move up to the room which is for pre-schoolers there. So educationally I don't think there should be much difference as nowadays there is an early year curriculum that nurseries and preschools follow.

Sqk is in the same position as well. I am in the fortunate state that I am on adoption leave till next summer so he will probably be going to the school nursery 5 half-days in September with a child minder (if I find one with a vacancy locally) for the rest of the 4 days I work. I am hoping he will be starting one session a week at local pre-school in January - they are doing their best to find a slot - if they have space this may increase to 15 hrs a week over the next 6 months. But DH and I decided it would be good for him to go to the school nursery when he can (academic year he turns 4) so that he starts to get to know the place and some of the children he will be going through school with. Just hope my sister has managed to get the school well trained in adoption by then. Mind you she pointed out to them a few weeks back she knows of at least 3 other adopted children who will be arriving in next 3 years (Sqk, my younger nephew and the daughter of a friend whose BC is there already). The reaction was interesting.....

Hey Chotimonkey.... 2015 start seems a very long time off... If I had my time over I would favour the smaller more nurturing environment every time.... My two needed the peer interaction & behaviour integration.... Sept 2014 would be a good changeover she would then only be a year from starting school & a whole school year in pre would set her up nicely... Others might move on from nursery to pre so familiar friends from this year too....
Hth.... Good Luck.....

Hi thanks...
I wasn't thinking of changing anything for squirrel till September of 2014, but I need to decide and put her name down for preschools as I'm a bit late and they have v long waiting lists!!
I think we'll try and get a pre school place for sept 2014/ jan2015 and run nursery and pre school together
I'm a bit torn between two schools, are we allowed to provisionally put her name down for both pre schools and decide nearer the time or do we need to decide now?
Thanks v much

Have you applied yet? My LO is 2 and I waited until September of 2013 to apply for some time at pre-school which she will start quite soon. I waited until then as the law changed stating that all LAC and adopted children will have priority, I assumed I would pay but found out that my county are funding all adopted children to attend pre school.

Our DS has been attending nursery for a year now. Starting off a couple of half days and building up to 2.5 days a week. This January he also started at the pre-school that feeds into the primary school we want him to go to, to ease that transition, when it happens. So, he is one day a week at pre-school and two days at nursery. I think this works really well as a compromise because the nursery is very outdoorsy, and DS loves it and has some firm friends - but it feeds lots of primary schools and only 1 boy will be going to the same primary, while the pre-school seems good on building the skills needed by the 'rising 5s' and almost all the kids there (only 8, it's really small!) will be in the same reception class at primary.
