My son is at a weekly residential school and I want him, on a temp basis, to go part time Mon night to Fri after breakfast - so three full days at school. The HT is adamant that he won't ok this. He is prepared to make changes to his timetable but I think more time at home is needed. Does anyone know the legalities. I have a 2nd meeting next week.

I seem to recall that flexi schooling is at the discretion of the head teacher. Maybe google flexi schooling?

From my understanding, flexi-schooling was basically made illegal earlier in the year, by removing a code that could be put on the register when the pupil was absent. My DS is very part time at the moment but his code is medical absence and the plan is to re integrate. I would love to home ed with the support of our local school, who couldn't be more helpful or understanding of his needs but I doubt we'd get it past the LEA. (I know I could home ed but I want to do it with my son having a connection to the school and utilising some of their resources. This would of course save the LEA money but they never seem to be able to see that far ahead! They'd rather I just home ed and then they wouldn't have to maintain his statement.)
Flexi-schooling issues: I think it's down to funding-the school is either funded for a full time child on roll or not. So if your child is not full time, then the school are receiving funds for a child who isn't there.
Hope that explains it! Good luck!

Hope fully Spinnaker will come along later and read this. He seems to be a schools expert and may know more.

Louie is correct - part time schooling is no longer at the discretion of the head. That's not to say it can't be done, but it has to be more formalized. It was changed because some schools were using the "part time" card to basically get rid of difficult students who were too disruptive in lessons, particularly for year 11. However, part time schooling can be agreed with the support of external agencies - we have students on reduced curriculum supported by CAMHS, some who are on PSP and part time is agreed with the LA (normally short term for specific issues) and others who are part time on medical advice. There needs to be a care/support plan in place with the evidence for why the decision was made and a reintegration plan (it is only supposed to be a short term solution).
Why not try your virtual head in your authority? They seem to be taking on responsibility for adopted children as well as LACs.
