Just wanted to ask if the new adaptation of the BFG is safe to watch for our LOs. I know the original film but wondered how far Spielberg has strayed from the original book and possibly introduced difficult moments for our kids.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I took Little Minnow (12) and he thought it was close to the story. He didn't relate the story to himself at all. I thought it was onemof the best children's films I've ever seen. It had the audience spellbound. Not too scary but scary enough. Big Fish loved the Giants. If they've read the book at school I would say go for it. There are possibilities of story of girl without parents etc but the Giants and the actual visual pleasure of the film would overtake that.

Thanks, Esty. That's really helpful. Not sure if LO is not too young to watch, she's nearly 5. I doubt she'd fully understand the film but might like Sophie and her big friend.

If mine was 5 I'd think about it as the idea of someone taking you from your bed might be too real.

My sister and her two children aged 9 and 11 went to see it, they thought it was great, but warned me that my two aged 6 and 7 would find the film too scary, being stolen from their beds by strangers is one of their fears so we are giving it a miss.

I think so will I, Mudlark. I wasn't sure to begin with when hubby suggested we go. There is plenty of time to watch it on Netflix one day when she's a bit older.

Yep Monkey Boy thinks we stole him to being stolen from your bed at night has always been a challenging part of the BFG story for us. We find you can't avoid these things so it just means a chat beforehand and making sure they still want to go after the chat. We are suffering loads of regression at the moment anyway so I'm not that keen to add any further stress to the mix but we shall see how we go. We have the holiday to survive first

We took our kids (6 &12)
We had no fall out
I thought it was too long for my 6yo & he did wriggle towards the end
As adults we thoughg it was ok maybe great but it didn't wow us.
Saying that neith my partner or I thought that particular Dahl story our favourite anyway
We saw it via discounted cinema tickets so happy to be blaise about it.

I took squirrel and howler 4 and 5, we have read the book, made dream jars and frobscottle, because they knew the story, and that all ends well, they loved it (the Giants were more oafish then monstery)... They wore their nighties and 3d Sophie glasses, They loved the whizz popping and we have many reinactions of the scene at home... I loved it too... One of the papers had a pullout section too with top trump cards which they could add their own details to. Big thumbs up from the monkey house hold.

Thanks Choti. Sounds like your 2 really enjoyed the film. Nit sure Butterfly would react the same way, but maybe I need to think things through again. Sometimes I do find myself analysing and worrying too much.
