Just thought I'd ask you experts .. I started menopause around 18 months ago and it's been ok so far, no real symptoms apart from feeling old , not missing the monthly visitors one bit , so all in all I've gotten off quite lightly I think. But just this past week, I am suffering from overheating, especially at night in bed and wondered if anyone had anything they'd tried/recommend to help with this as it's disturbing my sleep, and then once woken I can't get back to sleep so am feeling very tired the next day. Also my new house mate (cat) thinks it's great and wants to play and run round the house when I wake up, which doesn't help. I seem to remember a thread about this on the old boards, but can't remember what people recommended, so thought I'd start a thread on this for everyone as a lot of us seem to be "of a certain age". Was there anything in particular that worked for you?

Hrt! Tried other stuff, cost a fortune and no more or less safe than hrt.
I was having mood swings, flushes and night sweats.
Horrible. And not really doable with young kids.

Yep HRT! My brief stint on it was fab, even though I'm still getting my monthly visits.
I've had to stop it now because of the breast cancer and I'll be getting tamoxifen instead lol.
So I will probably be looking for alternatives to HRT before long xx

I only had the hot flushes and night sweats - no other symptoms at all - I had a fan and my window open (the fan also drowned out some of the noise from shadette being awake all night)

Sorry to gatecrash, but does anyone know at what age this is all supposed to kick off, I had the vague idea that it would start in the late 40s and be over with in a couple of years.
Have reached 54 with no symptoms and regular monthly periods - getting a bit fed up if I'm honest, even changed brands because "Always" seemed to be tempting fate.

Like shadow I only had the baleeshia beacon face & night sweats ...(well weight gain too coz metabolism slowed) I took & still do Xtra calcium .... Don't know if I'm missing anything not taking HRT...
Oh and age at menopause 35!!!!!!
Huge plus no monthly visitors & when doing home study no lectures about future boyfriends & ' the pill ' to safeguard the boys placement!!!! That seemed a great bonus at the time.... My pet demon loved having things to nag me about!!! She couldn't about that

Think the average age is around 50, but haven't a clue how long it's supposed to last.
Blimey Moo 35 that's a bit young!

Jazz, you've just made me realise what my problem is!! I feel quite cheated really, my mother was 43 when she went through the menopause, my younger sister is now almost out the other side and I have been on the brink of starting it for 2 years (the peri menopausal stage) without any real sign of progress.
I'm 53 in a couple of months and frankly think its high time I was done too!
Though I would not welcome the hot flushes etc

I've been menopausal for the past 2 years now.
Visits have more or less stopped I think, but still get the night sweats on and off, and the mood swings and irritability can be pretty yucky!

Just in case anyone missed my comment in the thread about PMS I'll copy it here: I went to an interesting talk about PMS and menopause recently. She suggested charting your symptoms to see patterns - even if it isn't related to your cycle, you might spot something else that is triggering it. She also recommended eating a starchy snack every 3 hours and esp. 1 hour before bed to counter pms/ menopause symptoms as here: www.goodhealthus.com/articles/ghme-pms.htmI'm mentioning it in case it is PMS related or in case it might help other people's PMS symptoms. One of the women at the talk said she had been suffering night sweats which disappeared once she started eating some starch an hour before bed. (I think complex carbs are recommended rather than biscuits or white bread!)

Docs seem unsure if I am menopausal at 40 but I am not ovulating (no idea what this means really in menopausal terms).
I have a lot of hormonal type symptoms. For temperature regulation exercise seems to really help.
I have been told black cohosh is good too but haven't tried it.

For hot flushes eat soy beans everyday.
I soak them overnight, dry in a tea towel, bake them on a tray gas mark 5 till crisp. Season with a little salt and keep in fridge eating a small handful 3 times a day.
Apparently Asian women with a lot of soy in their diet do not get hot flushes.
I was having 4 or 5 a day and now get them rarely.

Wow NDF that sounds great and more appealing than taking chemicals. Might give it a try. I don't find flushes too bad during the day, it's the night sweats that are bothering me, keep waking up boiling hot, and then can't get back to sleep, so end up feeling really tired the next day. Will report back if it works.

I think using soya milk instead of cows milk can help too.

HRT is the only thing with any scientific evidence behind it Current rationale is lowest dose, the shortest time, to alleviate symptoms Once symptoms are under control, then worth reducing your dosing to say, every other day, to keep symptoms at bay. Menopause is complete when no periods for 1 year after the age of 52, & for 2 years before the age of 52 ( I think) 52 is the average age of menopause Good websites are The British Menopause Society & www.patient.co.ukAny bleeding after menopause is deemed to have occurred needs reporting to your GP & probably investigating for the cause of it. All other 'treatments' don't work v well - you gave to consume LOTS of soya ( probably more than you could manage) to ward off sweats as well as HRT does & black cohosh has v limited data to support it. ( No, I don't work for an HRT drug company)!

HRT didn't work for me but Black Cohosh was very effective at alleviating all symptoms.

No advice about night sweats as rarely get those, thankfully. 53 this year and no sign of monthly visits stopping but they have become quite heavy so changing from normal. I am overweight and read that produces oestrogen and therefore can alleviate symptoms...the only plus about being overweight according to what I read! Have been having hot flushes for several years but they are not too bad. So not much help really but I always tell people about the minniepauz website which has cartoons on it...a bit of humour always helps.
