After 4 and a half tumultuous years with our adopted two something lovely happened the other day in the car.
My relationship with my DD has always been difficult and conversation does not always easily flow. We were in the car, just the two of us, being quiet as usual, despite my best efforts to promote communication. Suddenly she said 'It's better to have adopted parents than birth parents because you know that they love you'. WOW. Seems like she knows we love her then! She may not be talking to me much but if that's what she's thinking, then I'm OK with that!

That's brilliant and will definitely feel the bonds! It's. It easy our role and we definitely need things like this to boost us up. Hope she starts to open up more from now on.

Sounds like she is really processing her place in this world and realizing that she has a fab Mum. Great that she opened up to you and shared her thoughts. Car journeys are often the best place for these kind of chats as there is no eye contact so it's easier to say things than when face to face.

That's fantastic! What a lovely moment, you can treasure that going forwards. It's so special to know that she is certain you love her My kids also like to initiate adoption/abuse/birth family etc conversations in the car. As jmk said, lack of eye contact makes it easier, as does the fact that you aren't face-face and you can focus on what's going on outside the car at the same time. I also wonder if the movement/vibrations/rythm or whatever it is, of the car is helpful?

That's so nice. We don't have a car although I might consider getting one if it prompts comments like these. Mind you - walking also seems to have a similar affect on my LO. Things pop out that wouldn't when you are just at home.
