Just got back from Remembrance Parade where Bert was asked to be the Standard Bearer for his Beavers troop. His leader asked me what sort of mood he was in and was he up for it, she has ASD and special need kids herself and really gets our Bert and has always encouraged him. He struggled to understand the shouted orders, couldn’t remember his left from his right and his tic made a comeback appearance but…...he marched confidently with the flag held high, he managed not to talk or bark noises until the wreaths were laid, he watched the others carefully to check he was doing what he should and managed to stand relatively still. I could see just how hard he was concentrating to hold it all together, I am soo proud of him and felt a tad emotional when 2 other mum’s came over to say how well he had done, they also knew it was a brave and big moment for him too

As others have said, well done to both of you, that's amazing - I remember how much pressure it was carrying the flag for guides, but such a proud memory.
However also hats off to what sounds like a wonderful Beavers leader - I doubt many leaders in that position would have taken the "risk" for such a prestigious occasion. Sounds like a real gem!

Thanks for all the kind words. Bert has just turned 8yrs and is off to Cubs in January. He has a choice of 2 troops, one run by our beaver leaders partner who we know quite well now and a lovely lady leader, who others have spoken highly of. Beaver leader has told us categorically not to send him to her partner's session as he is not great with special needs kids , well she has 4 SN plus he has kids of his own. So fingers crossed for the New Year, Bert may be 8 but functions emotionally and behaviourally at 4.5 to 5 years. I just hope he can cope with the change.
