These are the main things I did not expect
You have 'lost' your child before they even join your family........the hole that trauma creates is enornmous. If you don't fall into the hole with your child, someone will push you in.......friends, family, other parents, social services, education.
They won't help to pull any of you out. They will blame you and your child for falling in there. It can't possibly be anyone else's fault.
When trying to help your child, you will lose your dignity and will have to behave in undignified ways to get anyone to hear you.
Secondary trauma is real.
The ripples of trauma can easily become a tsunami, with no way of stopping it.
Ho Hum.
