Who remembers the summer of 1976 ?
For me it was the year between primary and secondary school. I remember it as a golden time, endless days and week, waiting at the standpipe to fetch the water.
Do you think our older kids will look back on this year in the same way, particulalry with all the World Cup excitement

My mother does due to the stress of keeping me cool and out of the heat (I was 1 year old) - as wel;l getting chickenpox twice during it. I do remember the threat of standpipes in Yorkshire back in 1995 and the tankers on the M62 brininging water to fill up the nearly dry reservoirs.

Woa you bet I do feel quite old admitting to it!!
My first school summer holiday job was tending 'Gertrude' one of the first whippy ice cream machines ever spotted in these parts..... happy happy memories...
This summer has been so very very challenging.... no grass just dust & brown crispy quiffs! Poor cows hungrily munching what they can... will have to start feeding hay very very early me thinks... Us poor farmers get forgotten in the excitement of great hot & dry sunny days. Maize crop non existant down here... no ears on the green bushy stems.... All pet foods & grain prices will rocket in the autumn.....
Be interesting just how this summer will be remembered
X hugs to all xx

Yes I was 10, endless hot sunny days spent in the swimming pool and the beach, happy times, smell of Ambre solaire, ice cream and cut grass..glorious.
I have been thinking of those times a lot over the last few weeks, looking at my hot grubby children coming in from the garden/beach/ woods..and hoping they have similar happy memories of the long hot summer.....
Fingers crossed for a few similar days during the school hols......

Yes DH and I were talking about this the other night. He was taking his A levels. He started school in the severe winter of '62/'63 Jan birthday so I presume he started in Jan...not here to ask! And finished in the heatwave of '76.
I am a few years younger, so I was 14/15 in 1976 (August birthday) I had a job at a market garden. I remember picking baby leeks and putting them in bunches for gardeners to plant. And I distinctly remember one day coming home and running a cold bath and getting in it (no shower!)
I don't think this is as hot as '76?

I think the culture was so different then. Mudlark I can almost smell the Ambre Solaire, now you mention it
Children were more independent and spent longer out of doors. No anxiety over sun burn (I remember getting burnt many times and peeling skin off) Air con was not a thing (or less common?) Certainly no air con in cars.
So I think we suffered from the heat more. I think our children will remember this summer though especially due to World Cup as you say Serrakunda. Talking of sporting events I remember Virginia Wade winning Wimbledon in 1977, the year of the queen's silver Jubilee. We had a 'street' party in the local rugby club hall.
Great thread

Yes! And I do feel old! Took my O'levels that year. Chiefly remember falling asleep in the garden after I'd finished and getting badly sunburnt on my back.
Went to sixth form college that Autumn and recall it rained incessantly. Took my umbrella every day and it rusted in my school bag from never getting dry. So much for the predictions of a long lasting drought.
