I thought I would set up a Helen Oakwater Board as she constantly posts very useful information from her website for adopters to use. I know she is also touting for business, but I feel her heart is in the right place, as she is a fellow adopter and is really making a difference in the world of adoption and educating professionals and parents. I will add to this thread as she posts more links etc.
Dear jmk,
Dear jmk,
You haven't heard much from me recently because I've been writing my next book.
My intention is to:
Offer prospective and approved adopters an honest, robust, workable method to deeply look at themselves and the children waiting for adoption.ask some questions which are seldom aired during preparation, which can raise hidden issues.reduce placement breakdown by managing expectations and setting a realistic framework for planning the next 25 years of adoptive family life.future proof the prospective parents who will then have more tools, knowledge and incentives to parent therapeutically and hopefully have a more satisfying experience, rather than shattered unrealistic dreams.
Are you an adopter or social worker involved in adoption for children placed from the Care System?
Would you be willing to share your learnings and thoughts with me, in confidence.
You can email me at helen@helenoakwater.com or send a message from this link on the website

Some question to stimulate thought. Please feel free to go off piste.
Adopters:
1. What do you wish you had known about yourself before placement?
2. What did you fail to examine in your relationships?
3. What was the long term impact?
4. What advice would you offer your younger self going through preparation and assessment?

Professionals:
A. What questions can't you ask which you really want(ed) to?
B. What don't adopters "get" during preparation and assessment?
C. What were the characteristic of adopters you (grudgingly?) approved and subsequently regretted that decision?

You could also post on the Fabparents Facebook Page, though obviously that would be visible.

P.S. You are an expert through experience and it's that anecdotal evidence I'm seeking to explore.
