Today was our very last Friday session with Lapwings therapist. Over 4 years of weekly therapy over! Looking back I see a very traumatised little girl, who screamed and kicked and punched and scratched, transformed into a beautiful, smiling, laughing happy girl who now has friends, loves me and her dad, cuddles me, kisses me and lets me paint her nails and plait her hair!
It's not been a magic wand as that doesn't take 4 years! But it has been an amazing journey. Lapwing still has some stuff to work through, and lots of stuff that is hard sometimes to deal with. But the lovely girl who made her therapist a card, and shared a cake, and understood finally that she is a lovable and adorable girl, was a million miles away from the little scarp who we started with. Lovely Lapwing, and we are now a therapist and therapy free family....... a weird and wonderful feeling!

Thank you so much for sharing. Amazing and hopefully people in power will realise that 4 years is what is needed not 10 sessions!

Yes Runmum, you have make an important comment.
Knowing all I know now, I believe we have actually been 'lucky' that it has 'only' taken 4 years to get Lapwing to where she is. But if someone had told me at the outset it would have taken 4 years, with no guarantees of success , to get Lapwing to here I would have been shocked.
The truth of it is, we have reached a point after 4 years where we can draw breath and feel pleasure in our progress, but there will I know be further years of work to come. It is a story that demonstrates how much more money and support needs to be made available for adopters and adoptees.

Absolutely amazing to hear; you've all been through so much and clearly wonderful to see, not just an end to the therapy, but an end on a positive with hope for the future. Yes, as you say, there is likely to be more support needed in the future but it will not be from a standing start so to speak. x

Mudlark,
It is a while since I've been on here, and there's so much to catch up on. It was lovely to read about the progress Lapwing has made. A long time coming, as you say, and all a work in progress, of course! - but so good to hear of the changes you have seen. Huge credit to you all.
warmest Sivier
