I went to visit an SEN Adult Education College near home for Big fish which I quite liked. I had a long chat with the manager about his needs and all seemed hopeful. Just heard from the Social Worker that they've turned him down as being too complex. :-( It means I am going to have to continue driving 5 hours a day for the next two years!

Oh esty, that is so sad. I don't know how you do it. It reminds me of situations I have faced when no services have been available to my children due to their complex needs. Thinking of you.

Its because of his life threatening suctioning needs. They haven't got a Nurse, though in my experience you don't need to be a Nurse to manage my son's needs you've just got to be confident with a can do attitude. Does make me laugh that I do him by myself with another complex son and everyone else is 2:1. Although I get carers I am often here by myself getting on with it!

Sorry to hear that. Is there any way of appealing for funding to get college to provide said nurse? Anyone who could take your case re local college v. Long daily journey? MP?
Professionals always work in a way a parent never would. We have disabled kids at my school and, for example, due to safeguarding they always need 2 adults to take them to the toilet. Obviously parents wouldn't do this if they could manage alone. Schools won't give paracetamol unless on prescription but parents can. Etc. It can be very frustrating but safe guarding is massive these days.

His 2:1 is for his handling when he needs suctioning/emergency response. Im happy to drag him out of his wheelchair in anyway possible and i have superhuman strength due to years of moving him and horse riding. Most others cannot manage him by themselves due to his strength and involuntary movements. although I could fight for nurse I just think the attitude is now no longer positive enough for me. Still looking at alternative provision.
