A month ago I adopted my little dog, Melody, from Romania. When my children were about 10 and 11 I adopted a rescue puppy from Glasgow, a collie cross. We loved her very much and she lived to about 15. I have not had a dog for about the last 6 years although I have two cats. I am now retired so am at home most of the time. What prompted me to get a dog was really so that I would be motivated to go for regular walks. I think it will really help me keep fit and more healthy and hopefully lose weight and lower my blood pressure. I also enjoy having the company and companionship of a dog. I had been thinking about it for a while and had contemplated getting a pedigree puppy. Then I chanced upon the website: dogsblog. I had no idea that there were small animal charities in the UK that were involved in aiding the rescue and adoption of dogs from awful conditions in Romania especially but also other countries including Spain, Portugal, Cyprus and even Korea (from the meat trade). Then I came across the advert for Melody. I felt so sorry for her and thought she would suit me just fine, so I offered to adopt her. I then had to have a home visit to assess me (it reminded me of adopting the children all those years ago!). The lady who came was an expert on pointers and brought one with her for the visit. I was approved. I then paid the adoption fee to cover the costs, including travel. All the dogs are checked by vets, they are microchipped, vaccinated, have rabies shots, are spayed/neutered, deflead and dewormed. They have their own passports. They then travel overland on dog transporters. She travelled for 5 days, from Romania, through Austria, Germany, France, over the Channel and to the UK. She then travelled from Essex up to Scotland. When she arrived she refused to get out of the crate and required some persuasion!
She is doing incredibly well and is adorable. She is a different dog already. She has a lovely temperament, is friendly with other dogs and people, loves her walks, is becoming housetrained, will be going to puppy classes. She is very mischievous, chews everything and is an opportunistic thief! My daughter absolutely adores her and she gets on well with her two dogs. Already I can't imagine life without her.
