we have a 40 litre cold water tank, with correct filters, live plants, 9 fishies or we did. We've had them the best part of 2 years, not changed anything about cleaning routine. had a bit of an algae problem a few weeks ago but sorted that out. over the last 10 days 7 have all keeled ocer and gone to the great aquarium in the sky.
Ive just fished 3 of them out after a weekend away, another is about to go, nothing obvious on their skin
any ideas?

Ooohhh hugs how horrid xxxx No great ideas sorry.... we have goldfish & I have got the bug.... Recently bought Giant Orandas & have just set up a new tank we are awaiting some tropicals.... Been googling like mad.... just discovered a thing called biologicals? Little clear balls to add to the filter to 'harmful bacteria cleanse'.... never seen them before.... maybe give them a try? I worry about losing fish they are so fragile....

I would suggest you do a fairly large water change. I do have a very large tropical tank and, when I have had problems, the recommendation has always been water change. I've had the little clear balls - didn't think they did much though. Have you tested your water quality? YOu can buy test kits to do this and they give very good instructions on how to test.

last one has just gone. I did a water change and thorough clean, completely changed the gravel etc because of the alge, thought it had settled down,
oh well, I'll just have to set it up again

Changing the gravel might have been the last straw! I'd start again WITH the same water and do water tests before putting any new fish in. I've learnt my lesson that failing to do regular water tests is a big mistake. That reminds me.........!

Some algae can be poisonous. Oooh, just had a thought, if there is absolutely no sign of disease etc, is it possible that Simba put something in the tank? Not saying maliciously, but innocent play did introduce some nasties to my tank a few years ago and all of my fish died. May be worth investigating just in case. Also 40l is quite small in fish terms. I've always been told that anything smaller than 60l can and will lead to death because of, water going wrong more easily and overcrowding. That in itself can cause death and once one goes the others often follow.

they were tiddlers, minnows and platys, we had the number recommended by the aquriam shop.
I dont think simba did anything, he doesnt pay much attention to them, didnt even notice they'd snuffed it!
once we have reset the tank, I'l get the water tested and we are going to for slighlty bigger ones but just have four.

how long do fish last? Could it have been natural causes?
