Not so much chat/ fun stuff but rather something that should be fun and no longer is!
Starlet's school do their annual decorated egg competition as many schools do. This year, for the first time, I have finished before her for Easter and got to deliver the egg myself. I was horrified. The egg stresses me out enough as it is - it probably took us about four hours, with her doing it and me guiding/ sticking the tricky bits/ holding while she painted etc. At least we got to do it together and Starlet was justifiably proud of what she achieved. Until we got into the hall. Her little face just fell when she saw what everyone else had done. Professional looking displays, perfect painting, gems and glitter and feathers everywhere... All arranged in enormous structures, many of which, without any exaggeration, were made in boxes such as banana boxes jammed full of scenery, props and eggs. One child had done some sort of pop concert - the whole band on stage made out of eggs, complete with instruments etc, all the lights and microphones... Plus two full rows of audience members.
Firstly, no way can an 8 yr old do that alone. Secondly, it must have cost a fortune in materials. Thirdly, who has the number of hours that must have taken to just sit there on one project?
Its parent competitiveness gone crazy. I am genuinely sickened by the whole thing and Starlet's reaction when she saw what her friends had done.
This is all in addition to the charities day they are holding (weeks of the kids making things to sell etc), and the annual duck race this afternoon. The school seems to purely cater to parents who don't work.
I am now recovering over coffee in my favourite deli.
