Just before Xmas we had a broken window in loft extension. Double glazed window so only outer pane was broken and unit was replaced pretty quickly. It was a mystery how it happened. Best guess was an airgun but the window is so high up, that seemed unlikely. It also felt a little paranoid! We back onto railway so nearest anyone can get is the path on other side of railway.....quite a distance. Wondered if it could have been a bird, but there would have been a dead bird on patio.
Last night I was putting Dash to bed when there was a bang. Same thing has happened but his bedroom window this time. DH found 2 round stones on the patio. Mystery solved
So DH phoned police and they have logged it. No other incidents reported.
Anyway, Dash was unsettled but no more than that, he did go to sleep pretty quickly and the good thing is I was in the room when it happened.

Interestingly enough both children told me they were angry about it this morning. DH and I more philosophical.
Looking today in daylight I think it might be too far from the path and with trees and bushes in the way as well seems unlikely.
My latest theory is maybe someone could have fired from the passenger train that slows down just near our house to stop at station. DD says windows not suitable but maybe door window?
Read online about people shooting catapults from vans, in one case breaking 30 windows in one night.
I suppose its how some people get their kicks

how sad that this is how people get their kicks. Do all the trains go fast past the house? Its not a stone being thrown up by the train? We had a broken window and it was due to our neighbour cutting their grass - they hit a stone and it flew up and cracked the window. Would not have believed it if I had not seen it for myself.
Glad the children are angry rather than scared.

Bit of a mystery, but worrying that this is the second time it has happened which makes me think it may be deliberate. A one off accident could happen, but twice is a bit of a coincidence IMO.
Are there any other houses near you with bedrooms in the loft? Just wondering if it is some bored teenager in his/her bedroom with a catapult just doing it for kicks to see if they can smash any windows?
Chances of this happening twice from a moving train is a bit of an ask.

Also, unless there are any vintage trains on your line, all trains nowadays have sealed doors, etc. Its a long time since I was able to hang out of a train window and I do miss that !!! ( showing my age)

Thanks all!
DH says angle from a train would be impossible but it would certainly be possible from the path (I thought on reflection it was too far).
Ours is the only house with a loft conversion and end of terrace so quite distinctive. The first break was in the loft, Dash's bedroom is on the first floor.
I agree twice is not a coincidence. DH had a call from police today and someone is going to come round to ask us about it, although from the phone call he made when it happened DH thought they weren't going to do anything about it just record it.
We do have fast trains but don't think that's it. And occasionally we do have special trains.
Its definitely been a source of useful conversation. What sort of person would do that sort of thing? They don't think of others feelings. How dangerous a thing it was to do. Dash said he thought two people must have been walking along and had a competition to see who could hit a window.....possible!
A friend who knows a lot of people here told me young lads had been taking out the lights along that path.
The plot thickens...I'll keep you posted
