My pants week continues. Our letter re school admissions arrived today. They have issued kippers pupil/admissions ID in Kippers birth family name. I was so demented today with poorly kipper and a visiting Aunty that I didn't notice till DH came home and saw it. Im so cross!! How did this happen!!! adoption order was 2 years ago and we've moved house since then and they managed to send it to the right address so how come name is wrong? Is it our fault , were we supposed to notify the education department ourselves when AO came through? kipper was only 18 months old at the time. Its upset me. I guess it's an uncomfortable reminder he wasn't always with us. Are there any wider implications to this that I should be aware of?

My girls only had our surname at school, but the LEA had their previous surname (don't actually know where they got it from). Sad to say, it took many requests for it to be removed. They seem to have multiple databases, so they'd change one, and then some paperwork would come from a different one and that hadn't been changed. We didn't have any security issues, so just irritating for us.

Potentially unsettling for children too, if letters come through in their old surname. Kipper is too young to read but he picked the letter off the doormat for me. It the principle of it that annoys me.

This happened to us further up the school system when we applied for secondary school. Because dd had always been known by our surname at school we didn't realise it hadn't been changed on official education records. I was really worried it wouldn't be changed before she started at her new school. We had to show adoption certificates but it was fairly straightforward in the end. On the other hand when we went to change medical records officially it had been done automatically without us asking.

This happened to us too. I rang the county council & found out why. Primary schools get a list from the NHS to send out the letters re admissions. So for us, we had 2 letters, one in the old surname & one in his new surname. I called the school and explained and they deleted his birth surname. It was a shock when it arrived though!

Sorry this has happened Sockthing. I think you have to make a fuss about this or it will only happen again.
Whatever you do, find out who the person at the top is and "write" to them.
Problem is with phonecalls, you are only relying on whoever you spoke to to do the right thing. Once it is in written form there is a record of your complaint and they have to act on it. Get names from everyone you correspond with whether on the phone or by email/post.

Thank you Jmk. They want a copy of the adoption certificate and birth certificate so I have enclosed a letter with that. They can't tell me where they got their info from, as they upload the children's names from several different databases. His health stuff is all in the right name, as is his nursery record, so am wondering if SS were supposed to update them when the AO came through. I'll raise it with PASW.

Hi Sockthing, you may think your NHS details are correct but nearly 5 years in my LO recently had a hospital appointment. When we arrived, I was told he didn't exist on their system. I explained that he had a very valid NHS number in his adopted name and was then told that hospital numbers were different from NHS numbers (something I have had verified by another independent source since). What we found with the primary intake was yes, they had our LO's new name and we received a letter addressed to that but they also still had his birth name (as he still existed as this human being too), so we also received a letter in that name too. Hope you get to the bottom of yours.

Sorry Louie, didn't see this before - thank you I will bear that in mind. He has had paediatricians appointments that came in the right name. Seems to me like the system is a mess with noone knowing who does what , and different in every county! Thanks
