hi
We are in the process of planning our move the Midlands of 'Englandshire' in July with Thistle and Chanter moving into the English Education system from Scotland. oes anybody have any experience of doing this with teenagers?
Thistle (DS) is 14 and Chanter (DD) is 13 and they are in S2 and S1 respectively. They are old for their year (the joy of a Scottish system that allows discretion for children born between 1 September and 28 February to start school at 4 or 5). The school I want them to go to have space and have said they will work with us to get them into the year that suits them academically and educationally as well as socially and the local authority say its up to the school to decide what year they go into. In theory I think they should move into Year 9 and year 8 respectively after the summer age wise but I worry that educationally we are behind England in that they might have to go into Years 8 and 7. But, I don't really understand the system and the teachers in Scotland don't seem to get the English system and the teachers in England don't seem to get the Scottish system.
In Scotland they are the oldest by a few months having November birthdays although there are some children who are more than a year younger than them. I worry that in England they will be a year older than nearly all the other children in their year. They are immature and another year in school would not in theory do them any harm although DS would be nearly 20 when he left school if he went into Year 8. DD won't last until A levels and will want to leave after Standard grades / GCSEs (?) to do a musical theatre type course so its not as much of a problem for her.
Any suggestions please?
Cale
