echo nomoretears advice on the food (and text/email for fc). I feed my babies on the same food I eat from 6 moths old (baby led weaning) and they do fine. just be careful over added salt, soy sauce etc and sugar content. I actually eat better when I have children in placement becoz I am so conscious of not feeding them junk so cook from scratch (am much lazier when only feeding me and AS!)! and am paranoid about salt in particular, and having seen the state of some very young children's teeth (my own included as I had lots of fillings as a child) the sugar one is also a big one for me. and babies this age only need water and milk (full fat), don't need juice til they can ask for it.

hi amberle... def keep no more tears advice about sticking to fc food, but apaort from that, at the beginning ours liked soft 'comfort food' that dh and i could have too... def try not to get in the habit of making separate meals for everyone...its a killer, i did with squirrel and bu the time we got to george... he just had everything we did, he is a much better eater for it.
at the beginning they liked fish pie/ lasagne/ casseroles/ shepherd pie/ frittata/ pasta bake/ scrambled egg with veggies/ vegetable and lentil soup/ home made pizza/ risottos all soft, easy to eat and easy to stuff with veg...now they are more settled and a bit older they will give most stuff a go.
its quite handy as you start to get to know lo and his tastes to find a few things they will eat whatever... with all of ours if they refuse yoghurt, we know there is something genuinely amiss
just take it easy... if your are overwhelmed/ exhausted its totally ok to give them mashed up banana, yoghurt and smooshed weetabix for a meal
don't worry if their eating habits are a bit unsettled, ours went different ways...squirrel would only eat v familiar items if i was right next to her coaxing her gently through it, george ate everything and screamed for more even though i knew i had given him more than fc had...their fear comes out in diff ways
once i knew fc a bit better after placement she explained that ll the stuff lo had been eating (jam sandwiches, sausage rolls, wafer biscuits etc) wasn't stuff she normally fed her, but she wanted to make sure she was eating during intros because she might not eat properly for awhile after...
slow cooker has been used so much more since we have had the kids
but the absolute best advice i was given about kids meal times... don't stress about it, if they eat it great, if they don't, its ok they will eat when ready, the best thing you can do at meal times is make it a calm time... the rest will follow...
so excited for you... its such an exciting time having new bambini!!

And so we have successfully completed the day. Wow and what a day it was. LO now know as DQ ( dancing queen ) thank you whoever gave me that name. It is definately the right name for her. She dances to anything..lol. OMG sooo tired, but oh so happy. Had a few little meltdowns, but we coped..she ate lunch and dinner had a bottle and is now sound asleep..we did bath, bed, only thing we forgot was to clean her 6 teeth. Promise I will not forget again..
Thanks for the comments, we have mirrored FC mealtimes and will not be changing for now, just wanted some ideas..I have already sent FC a text, and will be emailing shortly. I can only imagine how she feels, so reassurance from me knowing everything is going ok I hope will help..
Thanks guys xx

Huge congratulations amberle, OH and DQ xxxx I thought I had posted last night, but it seems to have disappeared
Great news that you are now a family of three.
Re food, thoroughly endorse the other advice you have been given, Also, if DQ goes off her food, or you find it difficult to introduce new flavours/textures, let her think she is eating from your plate----works a treat !!

Hi guys. Still here just still settling in..things going great, although sleep though nights has not lasted..so currently running on empty..lol but I don't care, I know it's not forever and it gives me an excuse to go in and see little one..I know I know.
But she is totally adorable, even having 2 back teeth come through in the last few days..is still smiling, and dancing.and is sooo funny. Only 4 days in and it's like always.
SW been and is very happy, and commented that its like she has always been here.. But still in honeymoon period. Still mailing FC with little updates, just as we promised.
Change if subject - ish.. My work have now decided that I will not get adoption pay the same a maternity, apparently the change was issued earlier in the year..but appears it was sent to me..blah blah you get the idea. Anyway got upset for about a nano second, 1. My job was not a long term plan, 2. My DQ I's far too important to worry about he small stuff. There will be other jobs. Will be seeking legal advice but not for a bit, as I have other stuff to worry about..lol. And this is far too important.
Thankfully we took all the great advise on here, so we have been stocking up on stuff, making a few savings so not the end of the world..
Anyway off now for a To try and get some sleep.. Catch up soon xxx

Glad all is going well, bummer about the job but you're fortunate enough that it wasn't in your long term plan: good for you....as you say, much more important things to dwell on like your little bundle who hopefully is now asleep x

I have been wondering how you have been getting on! Glad everything is going well with DQ!
Hope you are managing to get some rest during the day. Try and have a power kip during nap time. Cumulative sleep deprivation can really take its toll. Keep taking the echinacea and make sure you have lots of vitamin C too!
So sorry about adoption pay. Definitely appeal but glad you have enough put by and it hasn't put a dampener on this wonderful time and your new family.
Wishing you continued happiness

And so people to close off my intro diary..don't worry will still be posting just on a different thread thought I would give you a quick week in the life of a new mum.. Yes I can't believe it's been a week either...
I can actually confirm, that you can operate ( probably best not machinery) on 5 hrs sleep or less a night. You LO does not escape out of the window, when you put them to bed at night..it is real. When your LO smiles at you and I mean smiles at you for the very first time, I do actually think your heart can melt. When you visit a doctor in the week, with the mind set of OMG I am such a rubbish parent, and find mild eczema can be brought on by stress, the doctor understands if you shed a few tears..lol I actually write a little diary of what DQ has been up to throughout the day.. Eats, plays, smiles at, sleeps..little marks etc..SW does not need to see but makes me feel more in control. Can't believe that after about 4 days feels like DQ has been with us forever..and I love it...
That's a little summary..although one last thing to add
Just been told BM is pregnant again...
Have fun and see you all on a new thread xxx

5 hours sleep! that's actually quite a lot! I'm beginning to think that having 7 hours a night (no baby in at the moment) is bad for the health! i'm constantly falling asleep. I need to go back to 4-5 hours I think!!

Sounds like you are doing amazingly! Exhausted but happy! Crying is normal and necessary! Sleep deprivation is hard, try and nap when DQ naps. Don't put too much pressure on yourself to be "perfect" and it doesn't matter if the house is a mess, a meal is not home cooked or you put the TV on!
What emotional news about BM being pregnant. Hope they keep you informed of plans.
It has been so lovely hearing about DQ. Can't wait to hear more about your life as a family of 3!

Diary each night is an excellent idea. Foster carers have to keep daily log books for each child and they're so helpful (particularly when things are going badly and you can look back and see you've coped with much worse and survived!)
LO might not be able to escape through the window but it won't be too long before she can escape a cot, reach her door handle and open the stair gate...! (Speaking from very recent experience with a 19 month old!)
Its lovely to read you're coping so well, look forward to more updates too.

We have started looking at buggies (for a 5 and a half month old) and I remembered you saying that your DH was a buggy nerd. What did you go for in the end and why and are you happy with it? Any particular things we should look out for?

Thanks for the update Amberle. Sounds like you are having a great time getting to know your Dancing Queen. Also sounds like you have fallen in love. Enjoy these early days, they are special. Sounds like you might be adding to your family in 9 months or so??? Keep us posted from time to time (I hate when new parents disappear never to be seen again )

oh wow amberle, you're lo sounds so amazing... so know what you mean about the real smile!! and know what you mean about not minding when they wake up because it means night time snuggles. one of the bset things we bought was a glider chair for sleepy night snuggles that are comfy for mum and baby, and the excema is common esp with small preverbal bubs... both howler and george's skin flared up with the stress of placement, we did lots of baby massage withe cream application and in a funny way it helped bonding, once theey were calmer their skin settled and it hasn't resurfaced since. we found out on howler's intros that bm was pregnant with george... it spun me out, but try and just concentrate on your fabulous little dq, its such early days for her and she sounds so brave!! you sound like you are doing so well... magica,l times

Scaredycats, I too am a buggy nerd and proud! I'd advise speaking to FC if possible before you buy because it really is a minefield - and expensive. At 5.5 months you're going to need one that lies flat still, but I've also had babies who can't lie flat (reflux) and need a slight incline (so a buggy with a sliding pull cord recline is excellent eg Baby Jogger City Select or newer Phil and Teds).
Do you walk a lot? If so, air tyres are great. If not, air tyres are a pain because they go flat or get punctures just as you're leaving the house.
Three wheelers are great to steer but a pain at going up and down kerbs I find.
If you can't speak to foster carer I'd go to your nearest big baby shop and have a push - take a child with you if possible because they're ALL easy to push when empty, not so much when a child is on board.
(I've also discovered Buy Cheap Buy Twice definitely applies - but have also had some really expensive buggies (may sound like Mugatoo...) that were horrendous)

Sounds like you're doing great Amberle, thanks for sharing your special moments with us! We found out BM was pregnant again during intros (in fact at the Meeting half an hour before we met oldest 2 for the first time!) I remember feeling completely in tailspin about that (not helped by SW remarks about new LO also coming to us when absolutely terrified about how we'd cope with the 2 we were about to meet!!) LO did eventually end up coming to us (years later) but at the time I just had to put it out my mind completely and focus on intros and settling LO in. Look after yourself, it's such a rollercoaster! OSx
