My AD is now 28 years old. I adopted her when she was 6 years old. We had so many problems over the years and she still has some problems but what progress she has made! Last weekend she asked me to dogsit. She has two dogs that are the love of her life. She has a flatmate who helps look after the dogs and she has two cats. The flatmate was away for the weekend. My daughter works as a carer at a nursing home and does 12 hour shifts. So I went over on Saturday night and stayed over until Sunday night when she returned from work at about 8.30 p.m. My daughter has ADHD and as a child used to be horrendous. In the morning I would wake her to give her her Ritalin tablet and let it start working before I attempted to get her up. Otherwise she was impossible. Anyway on Sunday morning she had set her alarm for 6 a.m. She got up then took the dogs out for a half hour walk. She then walked to her nursing home on the other side of town. It takes her 50 minutes. There is no bus service on a Sunday for her.
A couple of days earlier there had been a fete day in her town, taking place in a park close to her nursing home. There were lots of pipe bands there. During her work break she went along to have a look. She told me that she badgered lots of the bands and asked if they would call by to play for her old folk at the home. They all refused. Anyway she returned to work and a while later an entire band from Ireland turned up and set up in the garden to play a repertoire for all the residents and staff at the home. They were all thrilled and lots of photos were taken. The Activities Coordinator has told my daughter that she is putting her name forward for the 'employee of the month' award for showing such initiative!
