I have it on reliable information ( ie blue peter website) that if your child writes a story/draws a picture etc and sends it to Blue Peter, they will send the child a Blue Peter Badge. There is a list of around 200 places the child can then get into free of charge, as long as they are accompanied by a full paying adult.

You do have to make a bit of an effort and there are different colour badges and themes to follow, and I think there is a form as well to enable you to us the badge. I know it sounds like a huge giveaway but if you think about it most of these places are so expensive, having the badge might just tip the balance in favour of going somewhere. I was thinking of somewhere like Warwick castle , which is on the list. It's s favourite of ours and a good day out but can be very expensive. I wasn't planning on going this summer, but I might now, so that's custom they wouldnt have had

In my day you had to do something particularly special to get a Blue Peter badge - like rescue a drowning granny or cycle from here to Sydney for charity. I feel a bit sad that now any Tom, Dick or Harry can get one for drawing a picture.

There are still very special silver and gold badges awarded for rescuing drowning grannies.

Ooh a special badge. My mom can't swim, I wonder if she'd be prepared to put her life at risk so Stig can rescue her. Surely any granny worth her salt would be more than happy to help her grandson out?

I'm with twoplustwo! I'm sure my mum, (who is so petrified of water I had to sit in the bathroom with her while she had a bath) should step up and take the plunge!

Actually, could we have our own badge awards?
Foster carers, Adopters, Reward for Coping Excellently (FARCE)

In infirm cases we could request a badge for assisting & acting as hoist & 'talking 'em in' & not panicking under undue stress?? ( p.u.s. )

I looooooove the FARCE badge idea Sooz sooooooooooooooooooooo want one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YDD won two badges for art competitions on there as she is really good at drawing, but I never knew about getting in anywhere for free Would definately have used it if I did. Think the badges got broken and thrown away. I agree Corky I don't think they hold the same kudos these days as they did when you were young. Having said that my ex wrote to Jim'll fix it when he was little and he never got a reply - THANK GOD!!

Won't they get a bit suspicious if there's an epidemic of grannies coming to grief? My big sister got a Blue Peter badge for making a dalek They said they would put it on display but we never managed to spot it! Sister is 60 next year so that was definitely back in the good old days. Violet has got one. She wrote a letter saying that she collects Blue Peter books with a photo of her with her collection (she had a lot which she used to find in charity shops and now has the whole set, DH found the missing ones on ebay and she got them as a Christmas present one year). She also made some Welsh cakes from a recipe in one of the old books and sent a picture of her holding a plate of Welsh cakes. The free entry thing is valid until aged 16 and she has a card which apparently can't be replaced if you lose it. I never won a Blue Peter badge but I did get my Queen's Guide badge And on a whole other level, my late FIL got an OBE...that was back in the days before John Major (or was it Tony Blair) made them easier to get. And IMHO there are far too many people getting a knighthood or being made a dame now! I don't know, everything is being dumbed down
